Maestro Cares Foundation Charity Event Miami 2025

Changing Lives, Building Dreams:The Maestro Cares Foundation Story Published by Angie LaGuardia • April 12, 2025 Words by Imani Ogden Photography by Jennifer Jensen / @jennshotthat Editor’s Note:At Miami Shoot Magazine, we believe in shining a light on stories that uplift and inspire. This feature, beautifully penned by Imani Ogden, takes us into the heart of the Maestro Cares Foundation, a beacon of hope for children across the Americas. We are honored to share this story of compassion, dedication, and the power of community. In 2011, a chance visit to an orphanage in the Dominican Republic sparked a chain reaction of kindness and compassion. Zaidy Cárdenas, now Executive Director of the Maestro Cares Foundation, was volunteering at the orphanage when she discovered a group of boys living in a separate, overcrowded home with scarce resources. Deeply moved by their plight, Zaidy enlisted the help of her father, Henry Cárdenas, and international music icon Marc Anthony. Together, they visited the orphanage and were inspired by the boys’ resilience and unwavering determination. In that moment, the Maestro Cares Foundation was born. A Mission to Make a Difference Founded in 2012, the Maestro Cares Foundation is dedicated to building homes and schools for disadvantaged children throughout Latin America and the United States. The organization’s mission is simple yet profound: to create safe, loving environments where children can access quality education and enriching recreational programs. The foundation’s inaugural project, the Orfanato Niños de Cristo in La Romana, Dominican Republic, opened its doors in 2014 and has since become a beacon of hope for 50 boys. But the story doesn’t end there. Maestro Cares has grown its impact, expanding into educational programs in Peru and developing new initiatives in Colombia, Bolivia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Chile, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Argentina, and across the United States. Jorge Linares enjoying a moment of reflection at the Maestro Cares charity event. A Special Partnership Among the foundation’s most inspiring collaborations is its partnership with four-time world champion boxer Jorge Linares. Linares has generously donated his boxing gloves and iconic Samurai walk-out jacket from his 2021 fight against Devin Haney. More importantly, he serves as an ambassador and mentor at Brawlerz Box, sharing his expertise and passion with the next generation of athletes. Through Brawlerz Box and the Maestro Cares Foundation, Jorge Linares exemplifies the spirit of giving back, empowering young people to pursue their dreams and realize their full potential. A Vision for a Brighter Future At its heart, the Maestro Cares Foundation envisions a world where children can live, learn, and play in healthy, nurturing environments. By providing essential resources and unwavering support, the organization is empowering disadvantaged youth to grow into the leaders of tomorrow. As Maestro Cares continues to expand its reach, one thing remains steadfast: its commitment to changing lives and building dreams. With the dedication of supporters and partners like Jorge Linares, the foundation is illuminating a brighter future for thousands of children across Latin America and the United States. Join the Movement To learn more about the Maestro Cares Foundation and discover how you can get involved, visit their website at https://maestrocares.org/. Cheers to Spring: Miami’s Coolest Cocktails & Mocktails

Written & Published by Angie LaGuardia In Miami, springtime isn’t just a season — it’s a reason to raise your glass. Sun-kissed days, tropical fruits at their peak, and ice-cold cocktails that sparkle as brightly as the skyline. As the spring sun graces Miami’s palm-lined avenues, and ocean breezes tease our senses, there is no better way to embrace the season than with a chilled drink in hand. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, entertaining friends at a backyard brunch, or unwinding after a sun-drenched day, these tropical drink recipes will transport you straight into the heart of Miami’s vibrant lifestyle. From sparkling cocktails to dreamy mocktails, we’ve curated this selection of refreshing sips to brighten your days and lift your spirits. So grab your blender, pick up some fresh local fruits, and let’s toast to the magic of springtime in the Magic City! Sparkling White Sangria Recipe by Jennifer Segal A festive and fruity crowd-pleaser, this Sparkling White Sangria sparkles with life — just like a Miami evening. With a medley of citrus and stone fruits and a bubbly finish, it’s perfect for garden parties, rooftop gatherings, or a serene sunset moment at home. Servings: 4Total Time: 15 minutes Ingredients: 1 oz (2 tbsp) brandy or cognac 1 oz (2 tbsp) orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier) 1/3 cup superfine sugar (adjust for sweetness preference) 1 orange, halved 2 limes 1 small apple (Fuji or Honeycrisp), peeled and chopped 1 nectarine, chopped 1 bottle (750 ml) chilled sparkling wine (Cava, Prosecco, or Champagne) 1 cup lemon-lime soda (like Sprite) A few bunches of frozen grapes Instructions: In a large pitcher, combine brandy, orange liqueur, and sugar. Squeeze the juice from one lime and half of the orange into the pitcher. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Slice the remaining orange half and add to the pitcher along with the chopped apple and nectarine. Pour in the sparkling wine and lemon-lime soda. Add a generous bunch of frozen grapes for a chill effect without watering down the drink. Serve over ice cubes in individual glasses. Garnish with small bunches of frozen grapes and lime slices. Don’t forget to spoon in the luscious fruit for extra flavor! Editor’s Tip: Miami locals, visit Fresh Market Coconut Grove for the freshest selection of fruits and premium sparkling wines. Citrus Bourbon SmashCrafted by Miami SHOOT Magazine For those who savor bold flavors with a refreshing twist, this Citrus Bourbon Smash elevates the classic to vibrant Miami heights. Spotlighting sun-kissed local citrus and aromatic mint, it captures the spirited essence of spring in the Magic City. Smooth, bold, and kissed by citrus sunshine, this Citrus Bourbon Smash is the gentleman’s answer to a springtime cocktail. With bright notes of orange and lemon balanced by the deep warmth of bourbon and the refreshing lift of mint, it’s perfect for an upscale backyard gathering or a sunset toast overlooking Biscayne Bay. Servings: 1Total Time: 5 minutes Ingredients: 2 oz bourbon Juice of 1/2 locally grown lemon Juice of 1/2 ripe Florida orange 1 oz simple syrup (or honey syrup for added depth) Fresh mint leaves, plus sprig for garnish Orange peel, for garnish Ice cubes Instructions: In a cocktail shaker, muddle a few mint leaves with lemon juice, orange juice, and simple syrup to release the bright, herbal oils. Add bourbon and a handful of ice cubes. Shake well until the mixture is thoroughly chilled. Strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with an elegant twist of orange peel and a sprig of mint for that final flourish. Editor’s Tip: Stroll through Coconut Grove Saturday Market and let the zesty aroma of sun-ripened oranges and lemons guide your selection. Locally grown citrus will brighten your Bourbon Smash with authentic Miami sunshine. What Makes This Cocktail Unique:This isn’t your typical Bourbon Smash. By layering freshly squeezed orange and lemon juices, it delivers a bright, Miami-inspired twist to the traditional formula. Local citrus, fresh mint, and a sleek rocks glass presentation make it as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the palate. Think of it as your go-to drink when you want bold flavor without the weight of winter cocktails — a smooth sipper, perfect for Miami’s sunlit days and breezy nights. Food Pairing Tip: Pairs beautifully with light grilled dishes, like citrus-marinated shrimp or charred vegetables, for a full Miami springtime spread. Piña Colada MocktailAdapted from Bon Appétit Transport yourself to a tropical paradise with this creamy, non-alcoholic Piña Colada mocktail. It’s frothy, luscious, and captures the essence of our sun-kissed city. Ideal for all ages, it delivers a taste of vacation in every sip. Miami to New York to Miami – Wearable Art hits Miami and you too can be painted

While Miami prepares to welcome an annual surge of 70,000+ collectors, celebrities and art lovers for Art Basel, we are excited to this year be wearing the art and talking to visual artist Zuzanna Kozlowska who creates painted dresses, based on people’s unique energy. Starting out as a traditional artist, and a former Miami Beach resident, Zuzanna’s collection of drawings and paintings have been exhibited internationally. Her silk dresses have become a wearable-art collection that are designed by her mother, Olga Kozlowska; a fashion design icon who’s signature pieces include the 70’s khaki cargo-style jumpsuit. This year, Zuzanna will be live painting for Art Basel Miami, not only on her silk garments (which are available for purchase) but also on personal garments of those who encounter the artist during Art Basel. We talked to Zuzanna about art, life between New York and Miami, and what to wear when preparing to become a living work of art. What inspires your art? My art has always been about people. In 2013, when I stopped working figuratively and began responding to the sensations that I felt from individuals, I began to see my work as a greater truth. We are all so concerned about the way things look, especially between people and especially in art, that I believed it was more important to focus on what was felt. My work then became about dealing with how to visualize that, what is felt. So how do you go about showing what is felt? Ah, my secret! Really though, I am a very sensitive person at heart, but more so, I discovered that when I let go, my hands respond to energy vibrations that can be mapped out via pen, pencil or other medium. People often ask if I visualize the pieces before I create them, which I don’t and can’t because the image is created in a reaction to a specific person / time period / moment and therefore doesn’t exist to be seen before it’s created. How did you start painting on silk? Well, I had just moved to New York and was planning to attend an evening event at the Guggenheim, alone, to connect with the art lovers about my work. I was nervous, and I painted a red gown that my mother had sent me, really as a conversation starter and to be able to readily show my work. My personal style was so distinct at that point that it was easy to apply it to any surface. In the process of painting the dress I fell in love with how smooth the fabric was to paint on and how beautiful the results were! How do you go about designing your dresses and wearables? I approach garment design more like a sculptor which is why I often create using mutable fibers such as soft wire within the fabric and paint around the figure, rather than print on the fabric and cut it. The dresses are a collaboration with my world-famous uber-talented mother Olga Kozlowska, using patterns she’s perfected over her career. While I continue to collaborate with other designers, I find that my mothers gowns fit magically and her design sensibility aligns with my style seamlessly; probably because we are related! Tell us about your time living in Miami. I left Miami beach in 2012, when Wynwood was still quite dangerous and South Beach was dominated by elite nightlife. I both, loved and hated feeling like I was constantly on vacation in Miami and I moved to New York City for the art. Since then I come back at least once a year and find it healing, inspirational, and am proud of the city for supporting the arts in such a major way. Things are really happening here! Do you still create paintings? Always. Paintings have a resilience and a classic appeal that I will always adore. In New York, space is a hot commodity so right now I sketch a lot more and experiment with new media but l’m manifesting a larger space in either Miami or California where I can explore on large canvases again! How do you go about painting on a person? It’s definitely challenging to paint on people live because they are unpredictable! They move and breathe and each are unique in their shape, which is actually what I love! I use fabric markers and fabric paint that’s dry cleanable and match my brush movement and strokes to the persons’s vibrational energy while mapping a visual journey that’s personal and flattering to their body. Simple really! Where can people find you during Art Basel? This year I am pleased to be showing wearable art at Spectrum Miami Booth #319 as well as hosting an art brunch at SLS hotel on Saturday December 9th, where I’ll be paining live. Aside from these wonderful events, I’ll be flowing around Miami, painting across the entire platform that is Art Basel. I will be sharing my locations with Miami Shoot Magazine and you can follow me on instagram @zuzafy for locations and live feed. What should people who are looking to be painted by you wear? Light colored silk is optimal as a canvas, but really something they feel comfortable in, a fabric that is smooth, in a plain, solid color. Lighter shades show color more vibrantly. Polyester and stiffer fabric (rather then stretch) also work well. And have good energy! It’s amazing how we can feel positive vibes and that is something that I am both drawn to, and want to draw to share with the rest of the world!
