Gallery Nights SLS Style

By Nycole Sariol Every Wednesday, a colorful audience flocks to the sushi-hall of fame, Katsuya at the SLS Miami Beach, to witness the long-awaited makings of local artists in the South Florida community, otherwise known as Gallery Nights. This week, the likes of the oh-so talented Claudio Picasso showed us a thing or two about long brush-strokes mixed with smoky undertones to create a monochromatic concept. “I tend to find that old monochromatic photos translate well when I’m actually going to do something in one tone and, also, it gives it an interesting classical feel,” the young artist speaks of his recent collection. One-tone wonders weren’t the only piece of art that was floating around the Dragon Lounge that night. The “Saki Sangria”, a translucent drink of choice at Katsuya, turned evening hand accessory, a refresher made to stimulate mind and body while pondering the omnipresent art that filled the room, made with flavored Bacardi, white cranberry juice and saki, infused with yuzu and basic syrup, topped off with some cubed Fiji Apples and oranges. To close off the night, Deborah Gutierrez, Katsuya’s general manager, presented the unveiling of the Saki bottle for the week; in which the artist for that week dedicates a custom-made Saki bottle to his or her special guest for the evening, in this case, going to Sunita Bhagwan of Hot Listings Miami and her husband, Brandon.

Zen The Band Joins Forces with MTV & Rock Kulture

Photographed by Pierce Marratto MSM goes one on one with Juliette Cam, lead singer for Zen The Band MSM: Tell us a little about the history of your band. How did you get started? JC: We are actually very lucky as a band because we kind of just fell into place. My brother, Daniel (guitar) and I moved with our family to Biscayne Park in 1998. We then met the family of brothers Addison (drums) and Alex Smith (guitar) and also the family of Robert Bare (bass). We all grew up together and in 2005 is when Alex approached the rest of the guys about playing in a band. They agreed and that’s when Alex asked me to sing. Alex wrote the first song we that recorded and played called “fairytales” and that is how we got started practicing. MSM: Who are some of your music influences? JC: Some of our influences would be Radiohead, Chilli Peppers, Coldplay, Blind Melon, The Cranberrys, No Doubt, Metric, Pink Floyd, there are just so many influences that have inspired us to create our own sound. MSM: Do you plan to perform a mix of originals and covers for  the MTV and ROCK KULTURE event? Can you tell us a little more about this event? JC: For the Rock Kulture show, we plan to only play our originals. The MTV Staying Alive Foundation and Rock Kulture brought ZEN together with 7 other bands and 2 DJs to raise awareness and funds for HIV & AIDS prevention. The event takes place on Saturday September 21st in South Beach. It is an honor for us because it is also a ZEN reuninion show. We took a two year break as a band because we all had our own things going on, but thanks to this show ZEN is back in action. MSM: Does the band have any pre-performance rituals? What do you do to get ready for a big show? JC: Before most of our shows we get together in the garage at the Smiths house warm up, and go through the set. We also do a lot of goofing around to lighten the mood as it’s important to remember it’s for the enjoyment of the music and the amazing satisfaction we all get from playing. Once on stage we usually also huddle and say a little prayer to the universe to keep us tight. MSM: Describe the recording process.  JC: Our recording process has been different for our two cds. The first cd, was recorded at Dungeon studios where all five of us stayed all day for a couple weeks listening to each other record our parts. In order to get the right timing and sound we had to play all together so its a lot of repetition. Once the instrumentals are recorded I then lay my tracks last. The second cd, “By my Side”, we recorded in our own studio in the Garage. We had to work a lot harder to set up, edit, produce, ect. It was fun to record in the comfort of our own band “home” as we didn’t have a time frame and the pressures of studio expenses. MSM: Who had the final say on the group name? How do you feel the name coincides with your music style and overall performance style? JC: Alex originally had the idea for the name ZEN when he asked us to play together. As far as our sound goes we all write our own parts as we go, so it really is a blend of all our own artistic expression. In a way, our ‘ZEN’ is the ability to bring together 5 minds and create a union through music. The feeling of satisfaction the music gives us is something that comes from within all of us. Our ZEN look is pretty laid back, hippy, nothing too flashy or in your face, no shoes – Haha. The guys all had long hair at one point but I think it has shortened as we have grown up a bit. I wouldn’t say our music is something you would meditate to, its more like easy listening, a chill sound with a little bit of rocking out. MSM: What are some of the biggest gigs you’ve played so far? JC: We have played at so many venues in Miami but one our favorite places to play would be Churchills. We have played there the most and it feels like home. We also enjoyed playing at different colleges like Miami Dade, Broward College, New College in Sarasota, and Nova Southeastern. I’d have to say this show with MTV has to be the biggest so far, we are stoked to be part of the production team and cause. I feel like we have also matured as a band and are better musicians at this point so it will be our best show yet. MSM: Tell us your favorite things about Miami! JC: Our favorite things in Miami… hmm lets see, well of course there’s the beaches!! The diversity and blend of so many cultures makes it so awesome. Being open to different people and exposed to different lifestyles broadens the perspective. The art scene is another aspect of Miami we love as we are all artistic in the band and have much appreciation for it. Get your tickets Now to Rock Kulture! The missing link in music: The IDA Program

Photo courtesy of IDA Program By Sandra Mateu “When preparation and opportunity collide success happens,” said Award Winning Producer Rudy Perez.  An initiative born during a regular day of auditions from the minds of music legends Rudy Perez and David Frangioni. In a time where independent artists are taking the reins of their careers using multiple platforms and innumerable tools available by current technology. In a label-less world where there is a big gap of professional guidance and longtime experience. The final moment of realization took place and the missing link of today’s music industry came to life: The IDA Program (Inspire & Develop Artists Educational Program). “Rudy and I have joined forces to develop the artists of tomorrow. It’s truly profound to me how passionate and visionary Rudy Perez really is as a producer, songwriter and now in the development of artists. It’s inspiring to see someone of his magnitude that nurturing to the world,” said David Frangioni. IDA is a top notch package of everything an artist needs to become successful in the industry. With the invaluable guidance of professionals of the caliber of Billboard Magazine’s 2010 “Producer of the Decade” Rudy Perez, 3 year vocal coach of “The X Factor” TV show Mark Hudson, the Pioneer in music technology David Frangioni and Multi-Grammy winner Jon Secada. It includes an incredible curriculum of activities such as songwriting, improvement of your craft, music production, vocal coaching, stage performance, choreography, refining your image and even personal studio sessions. This program was born July 1st, 2012. It just finished its first session and it is in the works of becoming the next big reality show. The pilot took place in Miami Beach with an amazing group of 16 artists that took the journey of a lifetime in a boot camp where coaching is a non-stop process. “Artist development has been declining and no one is really doing anything for these talented kids,” Rudy Perez. This educational package offers top of the line mentors that are vital to a musician’s career. “Imagine having access to people of this quality. It is truly invaluable,” David Frangioni. “We had a goal and it turned out to be much bigger and much more challenging …to transform a becoming artist to their highest level in 7 days. These kids found talent they were not even aware of!” Rudy Perez. Every member of IDA comes out of the program with a recorded song produced and co-written by an elite team of leaders. “This is a tremendous opportunity. This opens a lot of doors. Imagine showing up with a great song written by Mark Hudson to an audition,” Rudy Perez. “If you are prepared, when an opportunity like IDA comes around, success is not that far away,” Rudy Perez. La Collaborazione

NOEL & UBERTO GUCCI By Reagan Lightsey Photo by Henry Perez     After first seeing Miami artist Noel’s dramatic images that seem to jump right off the canvas, it is no wonder that Uberto Gucci – of the famed fashion family of the same name – decided to collaborate with him in creating “La Collaborazione”: an unprecedented event that premiered on November 17th. The exhibit, held at the newly renovated Miami Beach Botanical Garden, was followed by a reception at the Raleigh Hotel. The first two paintings of La Collaborazione, were unveiled by Noel and Uberto Gucci during Noel’s 2010 Mediterranean exhibits. “I wanted to concentrate in the origins of the Gucci family,” said Noel of the collection. “That’s why I decided to pay homage to their original equestrian designs and the family’s love for horses -which it was what they started designing before it became a major fashion house.” Not only did Noel focus on the original concept of the fashion house as a whole, but he also concentrated on the foundation of the Gucci family’s birthplace, Florence, Italy.  “Of course, because they are originally from Florence, I was inspired by it, as well, since it is the birthplace of the Renaissance,” said Noel. “I mixed my style – the classical element that it already has with the foundation of the family’s design of everything equestrian.” By weaving authentic scarves, leather and horse bits that were originally used as accessories for the riders (granted to him straight from the Gucci family archives!) into his work, Noel certainly captured the air of sophistication that accompanies the family name. “My work is known for its dimension and movement,” explained Noel, “which is why it was easy to add the actual 3D elements into it…I used the scarves to create a cohesive scene with the whole collection…The elements on the paintings are directly from the original accessories made by the Gucci family.” Truly, the seamless incorporation of these renowned pieces provided by Uberto Gucci is something to behold.  If fashion, is indeed, wearable art, then this collection is certainly a celebration of the two worlds colliding.
