Summer Style Trends for Men

By Alyse Mier Photographed by Christian Alexander, www.christianalexanderphoto.com Hair Styled by Evelyn Montes, www.evelynmontes.com Wardrobe Styled by Josh Vazquez, www.instagram.com/josh.styles Models: Daniel Jarret & Jonathan White, Front Management It’s safe to say that every guy has stumbled upon a fashion crisis at least once in his life. They begin to take interest in dressing better and want to keep up with trends. He learns how to layer and dares to even buy that chunky knit cardigan. That is until summer completely throws him off his game. Dressing for this Miami weather can be quite difficult. So men now face the question, “what can I wear to stay comfortable and cool when it seems like the only pieces I can wear are t-shirts, swim trunks and shoes?” The answer is in the following summer trend guide. The following trends can be mixed and matched in endless combinations and most importantly it promises to keep you cool in this summer weather and not throw you off your style game. Bright Colors and Patterns We know it seems daring and almost crazy to consider mixing a pattern with a colored pant, or even mixing two bright colors. However, you live in a city where bright colors and palm patterns are highly embraced. So we say take advantage. Stay classic and combine a white polo with a pair of color blocked swim trunks. Or try to be a little more daring and mix a palm printed button down with olive joggers. Whatever you choose do not be afraid of a little change and buy a color or print you would not normally wear. Classic Sunglasses Fun fact: just like your skin can get sunburned, your eyes can get sunburned and discolored too. Because we live in the sunshine state it is essential to have a good pair of sunglasses to shade you on the brightest of days. Although we are fans of the new brightly colored mirrored lenses, we highly believe in versatility and functionality. A trusted pair or classic aviators or wayfarers are sure to give you more use and perfectly compliment any outfit. A Non-traditional Blazer Often times we associate blazers with office wear and believe they can make someone look stiff. However, blazers have come a long way since, gracing almost every runway and coming in a variety of colors and cuts. One thing that has remained true about the blazer is the clean and polished look it continues to give any outfit. For the summer months a light weight linen blend, light denim or colored blazer is a must. The blazer will keep you shielded from the sun and transition almost any look from day to night instantly. Chinos If you plan on buying only one item from this list make it a pair of chinos. So many men are still stuck wearing baggy cargo shorts or jeans. A solid pair of flat front chino pants or shorts will give you a clean look and will be more comfortable to wear than oversized shorts. Try on multiple sizes, brands, cuts and fits until you find the right one. You do not want these to fit too tight. Once you find the perfect pair buy one in every color. Chinos are a staple that will take you through almost every season. Boat Shoes and Classic Oxfords A well fitting sneaker is good to have; it is functional and comfortable. However, it is not your only option. Boat shoes and oxfords have become two of the most important pieces in summer footwear. They can be worn in both casual settings and formal settings. The best part of these shoes is that after walking around in them for two weeks they mold to your foot and become insanely comfortable. Although this trend is very New England and preppy don’t be afraid to give it a try. You just might surprise yourself with how functional this trend is.

THE HUB STORES Bring European Style & Sophistication to South Beach

By Katie Jackson  Photography by Imani Ogden  When walking into the lobby of the Franklin Hotel in the heart of South Beach, the smell of fresh coffee and sight of luxury boutiques take over the senses. The historic Franklin, which was recently remodeled into a chic boutique hotel that offers loft style apartments for short-term rentals, houses the innovative Hub Stores. Nestled into the Franklin’s swank lobby, the Hub Stores offer eight temporary retail spaces for European companies. In addition, the Hub Café provides a place to sit and soak up the ambiance. While these companies have flourished overseas, expanding to the U.S. may seem overwhelming to the owners. The Hub Stores aim to make that transition simple. They also help find professional photographers and host both promotional parties and other pop up events. Mark Howell, Director of Retail for the Hub Stores says, “When choosing a location to launch the first Hub Stores, Miami was an easy decision.” “Miami is very cosmopolitan,” says Nadine Curmi Borgomanero, owner of MADinItaly . “And of course, the weather is amazing!” Opening just last December, the Hub Stores immediately filled all of the available rental spaces, and quickly became a popular destination for both Miami locals and tourists. With an eclectic selection of upscale European brands, including accessories, beachwear, shoes, furniture, and art, it’s no surprise that the Hub Stores attract crowds. Local Europeans that recognize the brands are frequent patrons of the shops as well. “It’s really becoming a neighborhood destination. People really like to come here and hang out,” says Howell. Though it has only been a few months since the launch of the Hub Stores, it will not be long until the company expands. “It’s a concept that is going to be repeated in other hotels,” says Howell. With a unique atmosphere and an equally exceptional shopping experience, the Hub Stores have made South Beach that much more enticing. MADINITALY: AN ITALIAN OASIS When walking into the MADinItaly retail space within the Hub Stores, customers cannot help but be drawn to all the unique Italian furniture and home décor that the store has to offer. The exquisite selection of Italian designed masterpieces, curated by owner Nadine Curmi Borgomanero, is truly lust-worthy. But Borgomanero not only offers customers beautiful items, she also provides superior interior design and remodeling services that will turn any home into an Italian oasis. Though constantly evolving, MADinItaly continues to bring customers the most prestigious home décor by designers such as Karim Rashid, Mario Bellini, and Gaetano Pesce, whose work has been displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. With products ranging from specially handcrafted decorative pillows, glasses, chairs, candles, and home fragrances, there is no shortage of gorgeous items. “Everything is very unique,” says Borgomanero. After opening MADinItaly five years ago in the Design District, Borgomanero decided to move her company to South Beach, hoping to bring her tastefully chosen items to a broader clientele. Borgomanero is excited for the store to be a destination for both Miami locals and tourists looking to fulfill their luxury home needs. She is also passionate about providing her services to other Europeans who have purchased a home on South Beach, and helping them feel comfortable. “Usually, there are a lot of Italians or Europeans who buy homes here, and since the language can be a problem for them, we can help.” LA FOLIE BIJOUX: ENVIABLE GIFTS Yara Nagro founded La Folie Bijoux, an eclectic accessory store, with the idea of providing customers with special and unique items to give as gifts. With collections from designers from Italy and France, there is an enormous selection of pieces that anyone would love.Opening a new location within the Hub Stores, Nagro has curated jewelry and accessories that customers will not be able to find elsewhere. From hand chains and finger- length rings inspired by tattoos, to the popular sunglasses, hats, midi rings, and diamond- encrusted necklaces, La Folie Bijoux has it all. “There’s nothing traditional. There’s nothing simple,” says Nagro. With price points ranging from $50 to $3,000, there is something in the store for everyone. “Teenage boys come in and buy the chain rings for their girlfriends,” says Nagro. “And then their mothers get jealous and come in and buy them too!”   MISS BIKINI LUXE: BEACH COUTURE Miss Bikini Luxe provides the ultimate in beachwear glamour. With beautifully handcrafted collections and one-of-a-kind accessories, the brand has become immensely popular all over Europe. In a quest to expand their well-loved line to the U.S., the Miss Bikini Luxe designers and sisters, Alessandra and Francesca Piacentini and President Andrea Teofilatto, have chosen to rent a retail space within the Hub Stores and make Miami their first destination. Launching Miss Bikini Luxe twenty years ago, the Piacentini sisters made it their goal to revolutionize the way in which bikinis were made. “They really put their hearts into the collection,” says Clelia Redeghieri, manager of the Miami Miss Bikini Luxe Hub Stores location. Using the finest materials and manufacturing resources from Italy while incorporating elegant details like Swarovski crystals, the Piacentinis create elegant bikinis that will flatter all body types. “You can actually find a bikini that fits you perfectly, and then from there you can pick that style in any collection,” says Redeghieri. It’s not just the bikinis that are coveted. The unique accessories captivate customers and can be worn from the beach to the bar. In addition to the exquisitely designed cover-ups, dresses, and sandals, there are also the ingenious “t-shirt bags,” which are popular pieces that convert from a bag to a chic cover-up. “It’s basically a triangle, and you can wear it over the shoulder as a bag, or over the neck as a loose top to cover the bikini,” says Redeghieri. “It’s really elegant, fancy, and comfortable. But it’s also an accessory. It’s almost like a piece of art.” Miss Bikini Luxe also carries one-of-a-kind vests that a customer can choose in silk, suede, or cotton

Vegan Style: Fashion with Compassion

Photography by Antoine Verglas Gone are the days when vegan fashion was associated with bad taste. Today, many designers prove that faux fur and leather equals high fashion. There are tons of great cruelty-free designers that abstain from using animal’s skin, most notably Stella McCartney. Vivienne West- wood even pledged to the leading animal rights organization, PETA, back in 2007 to never use fur in her collections again. Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Betsey Johnson, and Tommy Hilfiger also joined the trend. And most recently, Inditex Co. (owners of Zara) have pledged to rid their inventory of all Angora rabbit fur. Some designers even go a step further: Vaute Couture, a completely vegan fashion house run by Leanne Maily Hilgart was the first all-vegan designer to show at NYFW 2013. No doubt about it, the new hot stars on design sky are not masters of silk and leather, but pioneers of high-end designs in faux leather and latex, like William Wilde who bedazzles Kim Kardashian, Kylie Minogue, and Beyoncé with his stage costumes and red carpet creations that seem to prove leather to be obsolete. “People want to look good in their fashion items, but not if that means that animals are being harmed and even skinned alive for it,” says Nadja Atwal, a top style-expert on TV who advises fashion brands worldwide and even posed for PETA. “Designers who still feel the need to use fur and leather find themselves more and more in hot waters. Sure, some people will resist any common sense argument and will still demand dead skin on their back to appear ‘rich,’ but more and more shoppers want to make a choice that feels ethically correct.” One of the brightest new stars on the haute couture fashion sky is Jasmin Erbas, whose team creates handmade gowns for the high-end customers from Hollywood to Miami, and from Berlin to Dubai. She is one of those designers who has craved – as she calls it – “good-karma fashion” from the start. After she won the Newcomer Designer Award in Europe, she quickly fooled leather experts with her real-looking vegan leather pieces. “I, thankfully, have many clients who desire fashion that is cruelty-free. It’s a win- win for both sides because it makes a customer even more beautiful and happy while making me more creative.” VEGAN IS CHIC Brands are picking up on the new direction and are now competing for titles like the recently launched PETA Vegan Fashion Award. Additionally, hashtags like #animalrights and #crueltyfree are now top trends on Twitter. A big challenge, however, seems to be finding fashionable shoes and bags that fit the vegan bill. Yes, we applaud fashion with a strong consciousness, but few are willing to compromise their “style.” VeganChic.com seems to present answers to all demands with anything from boots to belts, and wallets to kid’s shoes. At Noah-Shop.com, you will find the beauty of Italian vegan design from microfibre to bamboo, from elegant to casual, and from ballerina flats to key chains. A favorite among vegan-obsessed fashionistas are the ankle boots, pumps, and booties by Cri de Coeur. Andy Warhol once said: “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” With so many options to choose from, it’s no wonder vegan fashion is not just a trend anymore, but a change in the fashion world that is meant to stay. The Fashionista’s Diary

MIAMI FASHION BLOGGER LAUREN ASHLEY PATAO GIVES FASHION BLOGGING NEW MEANING By Katie Jackson Photography by IMANI OGDEN  Update: Patao is no longer moving to Pittsburgh and will continue to live and blog in Miami.  Miami fashion blogger Lauren Ashley Patao has certainly accomplished a lot in her short twenty years. After launching her personal style and beauty blog “The Fashionista’s Diary” a little under a year ago, Patao quickly became one of the most popular fashion bloggers in Miami. Now with high-profile collaborations, the creation of her Instagram-based boutique “TFD Closet,”(@tfdcloset) –where she sells her highly coveted clothes and accessories at discounted prices— and her digital book “Tips from TFD,” Patao’s blog has become a bona- fide brand. While she is certainly a force to be reckoned with in the blogging community, perhaps what makes Patao so unique is her drive to inspire others. Patao uses her blog as a platform to share a message with her followers—a message of anti-bullying, self-love, and overall genuine positivity. After admiring popular fashion blogs like “The Blonde Salad” and “Sincerely, Jules,” Patao knew that she wanted to start a blog of her own.“I’ve always loved fashion and writing, so it was a way to do the two things that I love the most,” says Patao. While nervous to enter into such a competitive industry, Patao knew that she had to follow her passion and take the plunge. “I decided that I was just going to go for it.” With the help of her mother, Patao came up with the perfect name that she felt represented her and her vision. “We knew it was going to be an outfit diary, an evolution of my style. And we also talked about how my friends and family have always called me ‘the fashionista.’ It just sort of clicked for both of us—it was ‘The Fashionista’s Diary.’” Just last January, Patao launched her blog and began sharing her flirty and feminine style. “I’m very colorful. I wear a lot of colors and a lot of girly prints. And I really like to do affordable looks so that people can recreate the outfits without spending a lot of money.” Patao’s trendy and budget-friendly blog quickly skyrocketed into massive popularity, accumulating over thirteen thousand followers on Instagram alone. Patao attributes her immediate success to hard work and endless dedication. “I really just hustled and worked my butt off. I think when you really want something you can make it happen, and for me, it’s my number one, it’s my baby. If it’s not doing well, I work even harder.” The success of her blog led to an Instagram-based boutique and a digital book—“Tips from TFD”—that Patao wrote to help other aspiring bloggers achieve the same success. “It’s forty pages of great tips that can really help other bloggers grow. It’s what I did to help myself grow.” But Patao’s desire to guide and inspire doesn’t end there. Through collaborations with Le Motto by She She Bon Bon—a clothing company that promotes positivity and anti- bullying through the use of unique inspirational quotes on stylish ‘Tees—Patao has taken an active stance against bullying. “So many people that I’ve known have been bullied. I was bullied in high school. We can’t change it, but we can help spread the word and hopefully make it disappear one day.” In addition, Patao hosts numerous clothing drives and events with local boutiques that benefit Miami charities. “I won’t do an event unless it’s benefiting something greater than myself,” says Patao. Sadly for the Miami blogosphere, Patao will be relocating to Pittsburgh in the spring for school, but promises that she will not leave her Miami roots behind. “I’m from Miami and my family is in Miami, so I’ll definitely be back and forth.” Patao is excited for the new journey and for all the changes that it will bring to her fall wardrobe. “It’ll be really great for my style because I’ll be able to sport lighter fall items in Miami, and the heavy fall and winter trends in Pittsburgh.” Though Patao’s success is quite evident, she remains humble, kind, and most importantly, extremely passionate—even going as far as taking over a spare room in her parents’ home and creating what she calls her blog office. “The way I look at it is, that in order for me to inspire, I have to be inspired. So I need to have a space where I can sit and say, ‘I can get this blog post done.’” With an entire wall containing numerous uplifting quotes and fashion prints and illustrations including sunglasses, shoes, and purses, Patao gets all the inspiration she needs. “I always say, if you can’t buy the purse, you might as well put it on your wall in a print!” Click here to view post on November/December 2014 issue.

Daniela Ramirez: On Taking Nany’s Klozet to The Next Level

By Nycole Sariol/Photographed by Imani Ogden When word got out that Miami’s number one fashion blogger, Daniela Ramirez, launched her own capsule collection with Venezuelan brand, Melao, local fashion denizens of Miami and the rest of her 209k followers couldn’t wait to slip one of her ten designs on. However, it was only a matter of time until the personal style blogger stepped out from in front of the camera to have a whack at other endeavors past lending out style advice. “Your blog should be a platform for your portfolio,” the 25-year old creator of Nany’s Klozet said, aiming her baby-browns up toward the ceiling of MSM’s headquarters, while getting her makeup touched up just moments before her photo shoot.  Though known mostly or her mash-up remixes of exemplifying ten different ways to wear the same red and black plaid pants (believe me, it can be done), the Venezuelan native affirms that there’s more out there than just taking street style photos in front of one of Wynwood’s graffiti-laden walls. So, “testing the waters” in the design-pool seemed like the obvious next step in the right direction towards expanding her highly sought-after blog. “I thought it was perfect timing,” Ramirez says. The collection, carried online and at local chain boutique, Blush, is comprised of easy-to-wear pieces such as flirty drop waist skirts, basic button ups, and monochromatic colorways in damask prints. Sounds simple enough. But that was, after all, the purpose of its conception – versatility for everyone. “There’s a 1,000 different ways you can wear it,” Ramirez explains of the entirety of the collection. Aside from shooting to make her collabo-collection fun for all, she also takes into consideration the ballin’-on-a-budget minded. “One of the pieces is, like, $39 bucks,” referring to the collection’s reasonably low price points. Still, while this is her first time collaborating to design and coin her own collection, this is certainly not her first time working side-by-side with other brands. “Right now, I’m collaborating with Nordstrom Rack, too. The prices are great,” she adds. “And I always work with Target; they’re fun.” But perhaps the most befitting team-up following her capsule creation has to be the matrimonial coming together with cosmetic brand, L’Oréal. “I’m doing a bridal makeup video with L’Oréal for my wedding,” Ramirez speaks of her special-day-to be with her fiancé and boyfriend of seven years, Gabriel Sanchez. The two lovebirds met while attending college at FIU and have been inseparable ever since. So inseparable, in fact, that the budding couple even works together – Sanchez as her cool boyfriend photographer. With prominent accolades already under her belt like international recognition, being a proud mother of a coveted capsule collection, and of course marrying the longtime love of her life, what’s left for a girl to do? Apparently, publishing her own book would ensue. “It’s going to be something like my remix section on the blog,” where she re-works one piece into several different outfits using none other than exclusive pieces by Melao. Is there anything this renaissance woman of the fashion world can’t do? Evidently not. Click here to view post on the July/August 2014 issue.

Fashion Flight, From Paris to Miami

A piece of Paris fashion arrived to Miami Beach when the French boutique Roses and Dreams opened its doors in celebration of their grand opening in Miami Beach last Thursday night. Macarons and champagne greeted the guests who joined Valerie Engel, owner, on the inauguration and the ribbon cutting ceremony of the French clothing boutique. Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jerry Libbin held the oversized scissors to cut the inaugurating ribbon with Valerie and gave start to the celebration. The boutique, decorated with vintage photos on the walls and pink and white roses accompanying French designers’ creations, such as Brigitte Bardot and Antik Batik, gave room to friends and family, shoppers and also Venezuelan actor Alberto Quintero and Next Model Chad Masters. Roses and Dreams is Valerie’s creation inspired by her studies in arts and fashion in Paris and her experience working for Chanel fashion house. She brings to South Beach Parisian apparels and accessories that will give a relaxed, yet chic look to the Miami girl. An Unbeatable Tag Team: Alexander Wang x H&M

Photos courtesy Umeda Osaka(H&M) & Steven Klein(Alexander Wang Portrait), Wikimedia.org Mouths hit the floor this weekend when on Saturday night Alexander Wang dropped the news that he and the fast-fashion retail giant, H&M, would be partnering up this year for H&M’s annual designer collaboration – the first of its kind. The announcement was made via Instagram when Wang and his close buddies were hanging out at the ultimate fringe and hipster festival, Coachella. Like a bomb, the news came as a huge surprise. Especially when the numbers 11:06 popped up on millions of instafeeds, as a promise that the line would debut November 6th of this year. “We’ve had Twitter and we’ve had Facebook. We’ve had an Instagram account for about two years now with no posts and we were really waiting for the right moment to do something with it and find the right project,” Wang tells Women’s Wear Daily at Coachella. No details have been disclosed regarding the aesthetic of the line, but the Balenciaga designer promises to accommodate both male and female future consumers. Judging by Alexander’s track record, we can’t help but anticipate his crave-worthy pieces – or we hope they’re crave-worthy. Only November 6th will tell. – Nycole Sariol

Lacoste F/W 2014 Runway – The New Sportswear

By Nycole Sariol A dark cloud of seriousness fell over the runway of The Theater in the Lincoln Center this past Saturday, as the otherwise preppy brand Lacoste – known for their pique polos and crocodile logos – revealed their f/w 2014 collection and took a new spin on sportswear. The collection – inspired by timeless Chantaco Golf Course in France – served as an outlet of featuring wool skirts partly covered by low and slouchy sailor tops and sweaters, argyle shapes, and monochrome hues of greens, reds, and blues, attributing to the nature meets architecture semblance of the morning; nylon mesh lent a sporty and playful touch, catering to the brand’s stamped reputation. While the models looped around each other, straight-faced and all, the beats of musical talent such as Gasaffelstein added an hard edge to the scene to project further seriousness, and to insure that this once happy-go-lucky line should not, in fact, be taken lightly. Famous faces like, Jessie Metcalf, Bella Thorne, Colton Hayes, and the recent fashion connoisseur, Joe Jonas, were right in the mix, occupying the front row and haunted down by flashing lights and photographers pre and post show.

Color Me Menswear

Fall hues always guarantee the given warm, rich tones hailing from the Family of Neutral, When one thinks of the autumn winds, the colors of falling leaves – deep greens, reds, browns, golden yellows, and burnt oranges – come to mind. But this fall it’s different – way different. Judging by the Parisian runways this spring, debuting menswear’s most prominent fashion houses and the riveted collections created by said houses, neutral was masked by its cooler cousin – Color! Loud, bright tones engulfed tall, slender bodies to wow and shock their audience. Designers like Yoji Yamamoto, Richard Nicoll, and even the otherwise conservative designs of Burberry took a turn for the bright side, taking their infamous plaid scarves and replacing them with lightweight, multi-colored neckerchiefs. So boys, come this fall, think twice before you reach for that black cashmere of yours. Instead, aim for the royal blue, bright green, or in-your-face print! Girls shouldn’t be the only ones hogging all the attention. Steal their thunder, or rather their color palette! By Nycole Sariol
