Cindy Crawford: The Meaning of Beauty & Becoming

November-December Issue 2015 By Gisel Habibnejad Photography by Nino Munoz Legendary on all counts, Cindy Crawford has made a successful career in everything she touches. It’s no secret she reigned as not only a supermodel in the golden era, but also as a pop culture icon dominating the fashion runways, redefining beauty, and finally winning over the world with her dynamic presence on television. In her book, Becoming, she shares her intimate point-of-view into the journey that made her the person she is today. Cindy’s career path began in high school, when she attained her first modeling gig leading up to her very first magazine cover. Soon enough, she became one of the most sought-after and universal supermodels of the 1980s and 1990s. She has graced endless magazine covers, such as Vogue, Elle, W, and Harper’s Bazaar and participated in countless fashion campaigns, like Gianni Versace and Revlon. She ruled the era of the ‘supermodel’ alongside her peers, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington. However, she never really stopped working with full determination; hence, the longevity of her career. Contrary to popular belief, this elite group partook in friendly competition amongst each other. Perhaps it’s because they all represented different looks; Cindy effortlessly gravitated towards the all-American girl look. Needless to say, she is believed to be responsible for spearheading the new face of the all-American girl—blonde-haired, blue-eyed girls had to make room for brunettes with sultry eyes. Born and raised in DeKalb, Illinois, Cindy is the definition of small-town girl. Not only is she rich in beauty, tapping into her intellectual side was never a foreign concept. Graduating as valedictorian of her high school, she then attended Northwestern University to study chemical engineering before she decided to focus on modeling full-time; a decision we’re sure she doesn’t regret. She made plenty of waves in the fashion world as a model, but who can forget that red Versace dress she donned at the 63rd Academy Awards in 1991? The dress was voted 12th most iconic red carpet dress of all-time by Marie Claire and even has a Wikipedia page dedicated entirely to it. She cemented her television career when she debuted as the host of MTV’s House of Style for six years. However, it was her famed string of exercise videos, beginning with Cindy Crawford: Shape Your Body, which solidified her TV stardom. Easily one of the top iconic Super Bowl ads ever, Cindy’s Pepsi commercial premiered in 1992 and forever left a mark in pop culture history. As if that weren’t enough, she starred alongside Naomi, Linda, Christy, and Tatjana Patitz in the entrancing and dark music video “Freedom ‘90” by George Michael, which instantly became a cult classic. Most recently, she played the Head Mistress of the all-star cast in Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood.” After dominating these industries, Cindy took her talents to designing furniture with her Cindy Crawford Home Collection, and later her very own skin care line, Meaningful Beauty. Throughout her career, Cindy has always believed that confidence comes from within, and loving yourself means loving your body and skin. Rightfully so, she’s sharing her flawless skin beauty secrets with the world. In collaboration with her trusted skin specialist, Dr. Jean-Louis Sebagh, Meaningful Beauty was born. How does Cindy Crawford appear not to age? One of her essential secrets lies within Meaningful Beauty. She’s been making visits to Dr. Sebagh periodically since she was 28 years old, and finally decided to share it with the world a few years ago. “Knowing Dr. Sebagh and learning from him, I wanted to share it with whoever asked for my beauty tips. This is my way of bringing Dr. Sebagh out of Paris and sharing his work,” shares the supermodel. Containing natural elements and vitamins, the formulas feed your skin the right nutrients to tighten, glow, and firm. The revolutionary concept behind the products stem from the extracts of a rare orchid found in the Emerald Coast of France, called The Youth Messenger Extract. It is exclusive to Meaningful Beauty so you won’t find it within any other beauty brand. Really having a close relationship with the brand, Cindy herself tests all products before they are released to ensure its effectiveness and likeness. Among the many products is the Ultra Lifting and Filling Treatment, containing a unique formula to lift sagging skin and fill lines. No routine is complete without the right facial cleanser, the Skin Softening Cleanser includes natural ingredients so as not to strip your skin from the natural oils produced. The Cremé de Serum proves to be vital, as it hydrates and reduces signs of aging. Infused with superoxide dismutase from a rare French melon, anti-aging peptides, and Hyaluronic Acid, each pump goes a long way and ensures a lasting effect. Who doesn’t love a little secret skin care advice from an international supermodel? Cindy advises that it’s never too early to begin the anti-aging process. Taking care of your skin from your early twenties can prevent most of the harmful aging elements from taking effect. “I think a lot of women don’t start worrying about taking care of their skin until they reach their forties. The earlier you start using preventative techniques–sunscreen, moisturizing at night, and cleaning your skin well–the better it is.” With skin care regimens such as those found in Meaningful Beauty and with the help of Dr. Jean-Louis Sebagh, she has managed to maintain flawless skin and a youthful appearance throughout her career. Cindy marks the beginning of the next chapter of her life with the celebration of Becoming, a reminiscent account of all the defining moments taken place throughout her personal and professional journey. Featuring 150 iconic photographs, the wide collection includes shots by legends Annie Leibovitz, Herb Ritts, and Patrick Demarchelier–with a few never-before-seen images. Her most critical points are highlighted throughout, such as her path to success and becoming a mother and wife. You will also find advice on the importance of having a healthy body image and the guidance she would give her

Craig Robins: A Not So Secret Love Affair with Art

November-December Issue 2015 By Angela Betancourt Before they were turned into charming boutique hotels, before they were restaurants, before they gained worldwide fame and recognition, the Art Deco District was merely a series of run-down buildings facing an uncertain future. If it wasn’t for the vision and determination of a few pioneering individuals, who saw this historic district for its potential, the Miami Beach we know today would not exist. One of these visionaries is Craig Robins, a real estate developer, philanthropist, and art enthusiast that has made a massive impact in Miami’s real estate, culture, and art landscape. Robins is also the Founder and CEO of Dacra, a real estate company that is constantly propelling Miami into the future. Robins’ vision for the Art Deco District was unprecedented. He began investing in South Beach real estate in the 1980s and steadily restored iconic properties to their original grandeur. As the neighborhood began to thrive and flourish, Robins set his eyes across the bridge. He is the man behind the Miami Design District (MDD) which has become a famed neighborhood in its own right. Less than 30 years ago the MDD was the neglected area of the city you wouldn’t want to get caught in walking around at night. Today, the MDD is a destination that’s home to numerous restaurants, galleries, artists, luxury retail brands, and innovative businesses. “When we set out to revitalize and reinvent the District, our goal was to cultivate an atmosphere where creativity could flourish, regardless of its specific label or medium. These artistic endeavors are all vital components of the fabric of the Design District – the value systems informing each are remarkably similar, with an emphasis on craft, quality, and a profound commitment to expressing a creative vision,” he shared. One of the first things Robins and his team did was to bring back the element of furniture design in order to compete with a nearby business. The move paid off and as new buildings were created; heavy hitters in the design world began setting up showrooms. Robins also fostered an environment of creativity and innovation by providing artists with studio space. “As the neighborhood became known as a laboratory for creativity, we hosted events like the annual Art Loves Design party to celebrate those flourishing creative disciplines. We created public art installations by Marc Newson, Jose Bedia and Zaha Hadid among others,” he said. It wasn’t long before leading fashion brands took notice of the neighborhood’s new personality. The MDD soon welcomed Marni, Christian Louboutin, Maison Martin Margiela, and others. There are currently more than 50 luxury fashion brands in the neighborhood with brands like Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Isabel Marant, Loro Piana, Tod’s and Van Cleef & Arpels expected in 2016. “While the revitalization of the neighborhood began with a cultivation of design showrooms and art collections of international significance, fashion was always part of my vision for the Design District,” said Robins. While two of Miami’s most important neighborhoods were being physically transformed, a creative metamorphosis was simultaneously taking shape: the emergence of Miami’s art scene. Robins’ passion for the arts transcends beyond his personal life and into his work. He even positioned Dacra to be a real estate development firm “that uses architecture, art, design and cultural programming to build creative international destinations.” He speaks of art not in the way of colors on a canvas or molded form; it comes from a much deeper place. “I am instinctive in choosing art, but my life is an interaction between intuitive impulses and a conscious mind, one checks the other. When I become interested in an artist, I tend to collect their work in depth. For more than a decade I have been working with Jack Tilton, who has been the single greatest influence on me as an art collector. Jack is one of the most insightful people working in the art world today, he gave me the confidence to work harder on building my collection”. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Robins is also the Principle of the leading international design show Design Miami and is also responsible for introducing Miami Art Basel to the city. Art Basel has now become one of the largest art fairs in the world; featuring more than 200 galleries and attracting thousands of visitors each year. Miami Art Basel takes place over one week in December. During this time, the amount of events being hosted around the city is almost maddening. Each year it gets even larger. The act of attending all of these events, also known as Art Baseling, is not for the weak of spirit. Robins’ take on it is pretty accurate: “Trying to get ready for Art Basel Miami Beach – it’s a kind of endurance event that you have to train for.” Though Miami Art Basel only comes once a year, Robins believes in creating events and programs that will keep the community more engaged in the arts year round. The MDD currently has a diverse arts and culture program that seeks to constantly engage the community across a variety of art platforms. Some of the initiatives include a lecture series, an art day for families, a six week live music series called District Sounds, and a Site-Specific Performance Series that takes the performance out of the traditional theater and into the neighborhood. “As our base of important cultural institutions grows here in the Miami Design District, so has our ability to connect the community with distinguished artists, curators, critics and cultural figures. The lecture series offered at the de la Cruz Collection, the ICA/Miami and Locust Projects (exhibition space) both engages and inspires conversations within the Miami arts community.” Each event is carefully curated to further an understanding of contemporary art and to allow the artist to engage with the audience in unexpected ways. By breaking from the traditional, the community has an opportunity to experience art in more unusual and interactive ways. The programs and events are designed to make art accessible to everyone. “Kicking Back” with Miami Dolphins’ Jarvis Landry

By Zachary Davita Photography by Nisso Studios Known on the field for his explosive kick returns, miraculous one handed catches and for setting the Dolphins’ rookie record for most receptions last year, the Dolphins’ wide receiver Jarvis Landry has emerged as a multitalented player for both his team and in the NFL. Never satisfied, Jarvis looks to build upon his first season success. “Individually, I just continue to be consistent, continue to try and make plays, and help use my energy on those plays to feed the guys around me,” explains Jarvis. He went on to talk about the Dolphins working hard each and every day at practice and, despite the tough spot the team is in, they are going to “kick it back into gear and turn it in the right direction.” Throughout Jarvis’ career, he credits his success to the mentoring his coaches provided along the way. “[They] allowed me to better myself and pick up habits that some guys wouldn’t have coming into the league.” This allowed Jarvis to have a “pro outburst” right out of the gate, which some other rookie receivers never discover. Just like his nickname, Juice, which he earned for his intense energy during practices as well as games, off the field Jarvis likes to wear his passion literally on his sleeve. “Fashion came from my brother. Just having him be in my life from a young age, he was always a big collector of shoes, clothes and when I was young I always wanted to be like him. But fashion is always something that I took to heart, you know, and it’s grown over the years.” Jarvis has worked with brands such as Destined for Greatness and Ethika, but for him fashion is an outlet, a unique way to express himself. Besides fashion, Jarvis likes to kick back, listen to some country/blues as well as strum the guitar himself. “I started at a young age, but when I got to the NFL, a guy on our team always played the guitar in the locker room. He inspired me to pick it up again.” His love for music comes from its historic past and he thoroughly enjoys putting a country spin on such modern artists as The Weeknd and Drake while playing his guitar. “My favorite Drake song to play has to be ‘Fall for Your Type.’” The continued hype around Jarvis Landry has built to a fever pitch in South Beach. In a recent article from the Miami New Times, Jarvis was mentioned as becoming the possible Dwyane Wade of the Miami Dolphins, something he considers to be a great honor. “You know I’ve been here for two years, Dwyane’s been here all his career, so just to be mentioned with a guy like that, it means a lot.” Jarvis again credited his coaches and all teams he’s been on that allowed him to further his success, but “we still have room to grow.” Recently he hosted the Jarvis Landry GiveBack Mentoring session, which gave him an opportunity to be a positive athletic role model, something he never had. “Being in the position that I’m in, being able to inspire young people and allow them not to make the same mistakes that I made… for me that’s the most important thing about giving back to the community.” Jarvis hopes to instill good advice on the young Miami community. Jarvis has looked up to such wide receivers as Larry Fitzgerald, Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens. “Having the opportunity to watch some of those guys live their legacy…on and off the field gave me the blueprint on what not to do and what to do.” With that blueprint, Jarvis was inspired to be the person and player that he is today. Jarvis Landry is young, creative, humble, driven and emulates his nickname Juice both on and off the field. His love and passion for the game could propel him to be mentioned with the very names that drove him to pursue a football life. Orianne & Phil Collins: Everything Starts with a Dream

November-December Issue 2015 By Angela Betancourt Photographed by Ihor Mokhovyk Hair & Makeup by Frank (IGK Salon) Location: SLS South Beach The Little Dreams Foundation (LDF) is celebrating another year in Miami with its Second Annual Gala-Concert in March. Seven-time Grammy Award-winning entertainer and foundation co-founder Phil Collins will be returning as celebrity emcee and host of the star-studded evening. LDF co-founder and jewelry designer, Orianne Collins Mejjati, is organizing the gala together with executive producer ACT Productions. She excitedly talked about the gala after her photo shoot with MSM at the SLS Hotel in South Beach. Guests will include more than 2,200 local tycoons, activists, philanthropists, socialites and jet-setters with a common goal to raise funds in support of the Little Dreams Foundation kids, which fulfills the dreams of young aspiring talent who don’t have the means to achieve their goals. It will be a memorable evening with a VIP cocktail reception, silent auction and delectable dinner, followed by a performance by Little Dreamer artists. As part of a new collaboration this year, students from the IRIE Foundation will also showcase their musical talent. “DJ Irie is a lovely man and we thought we could work together,” says Orianne who is a big believer in collaborations. “There are other collaborations that we can do. The more we help each other, the better it is for the young talent. It’s a matter of putting our strengths together to make a better world.” Phil is scheduled to close the evening with a special intimate acoustic performance of some of his global hits. However, he had back surgery late this summer and hopes to be in top shape for the event. “I’m crossing my fingers that I’m healthy enough to perform,” he shared. Surely attending guests hope the same. Phil has created some of the most defining music of the last 40 years- “In the Air Tonight,” “Sussudio” and “Take Me Home,” to name a few. In addition to his seven Grammy awards, Phil has multi-platinum albums and singles, an Oscar and two Golden Globes. Now, he can add Humanitarian of the Year to his long list of accomplishments. Orianne and Phil recently received the Humanitarian Award at the 30th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner for their work with LDF. For Orianne, receiving this award had extra meaning. After suffering an accident last year, she was told she would be paralyzed for the rest of her life. Today however, with continuous physical therapy, she has defied the odds. “Receiving this award was great because last December they told me I would never be able to walk again. I wanted to prove them wrong and never give up. And that is what the foundation is about; never giving up. If you have a dream, follow your dream. And even if you have an accident you can always continue to keep your goals. Keep your strengths and overcome adversity,” she shared. Orianne has since added to her dreams. “I have a wish and I’m going to do it next July. I’m going to climb the Matterhorn in Switzerland. And I told myself that if I’m able to walk again, that is something I will do.” It was this same drive and determination that put her on course to establish her OC Jewellery line in Miami to great success. In October, the designer hosted a cocktail party to celebrate her new collection. It was an intimate, yet lavish affair that also featured new fashion by Julian Chang and elaborate handbags by Hang2Dry. Orianne’s stunning jewelry pieces sparkled all around the guests as they sipped champagne ate delicious hors d’oeuvres and shopped for a good cause. 15% of the proceeds from sales of the Julian Chang Collection benefitted the LDF class of 2015-2016. When Orianne and Phil started the foundation in Switzerland, they didn’t realize how many young lives they would touch. “We didn’t envision it before,” says Phil. The pair, who was married at that time, began receiving letters from children asking for advice and guidance on how they could achieve their dreams. They decided to take action and with the help of sponsors, technical advisors, and “godparents” were able to start the Little Dreams Foundation. “We can’t guarantee a #1 record but we can certainly give the children a taste of what they can truly achieve,” says Phil. “It is about giving them the opportunity to do something with their talent.” Matching Phil’s star power, musicians like Natalie Cole, Tina Turner, and Angelique Kidjo among many others are all mentors and Phil would like to see other musicians get involved. “We are hoping to get One Direction this year,” he revealed. Though the foundation has inspired many lives, Phil explains that it has also had an impact on him. The past 15 years has created many memories and the experience of working with talented young people has been enjoyable and fulfilling. “There is an honesty and trust working with young people,” he says. He finds that they are not yet jaded and have an enthusiasm and hunger to achieve their dreams. Each year the foundation holds auditions to determine which children will benefit from the program. Phil also admires the courage young people have to go through the process. “It takes a lot of balls to come to the stage and audition. It takes a lot of confidence,” says Phil. When The Little Dreamers take to the stage at the gala, guests will have the opportunity to see exactly why their donations and contributions are so important. “During the gala we want to help people understand what we do. It’s a magical evening because you can understand exactly why you are supporting the foundation. If you give $1 dollar you know exactly where that $1 dollar goes; it goes exactly to the kids and nowhere else,” says Orianne. For the New Year, both Orianne and Phil hope to continue to generate awareness about the foundation and continue their expansion. “We have fantastic children

Haute Hostess with the Mostest

November-December Issue 2015 By Gisel Habibnejad The holiday season is all about celebrating great times with your loved ones—sharing past memories and creating new ones. While hosting these fantastic gatherings can become stressful, there are plenty of ways to enjoy planning and preparing as much as the party itself. Entertaining and hosting a party can be a lot of work. Food preparations, decorations, and cleaning are only a few concerns a hostess needs to worry about. Haute Hostess lightens the mood by adding a touch of southern hospitality to your home, from its classical chic aprons to home décor. Founder and designer Elizabeth Scokin was inspired by her grandmother to create what began as a holiday apron collection. Some of her fondest memories with her include watching her put together and host fabulous parties. Her motivation peaked when she found her grandmother’s signature holiday apron amongst her family treasures. Each apron is created with a little magic and festive touch designed by Elizabeth—ultimately inviting the southern spirit she is known for. Named and inspired by iconic women, each boasts an individual personality that is sure to spark your inner hostess. However, even more exciting is the flattering shape the aprons give you. The signature style closely resembles that of a cocktail dress: cinching at the waist and finishing off with ruffles to accentuate your feminine figure. Whether you’re looking for a classic look, like the ‘Grace’ or glamming it up with the sequined ‘Giselle,’ you’re sure to make a show-stopping entrance like every hostess should. You can even have your little ones join in on the fun with matching ‘Little Lady’ aprons. Take your party theme a step further with Haute Hostess’ home collection consisting of napkins, placemats, table runners, and pillows. Not only does it relieve your party planning stress, it adds a unique touch that cannot be found anywhere else. The Duchess napkin set is made from satin adding a subtle elegance to your dining experience. You can choose from three collections of placemats, however, The Black Tie line is nestled perfectly between classy and radiance featuring sequins made up of neutral colors. The detailed table runners are sure to set the mood as they complement any centerpiece and speak for themselves. The selection includes various patterns and fabrics tailored to party perfection. The Haute Hostess can help bring back those fond memories of hosting the perfect get-together with loved ones only to create new ones that will last a lifetime. These hosting techniques would leave Jay Gatsby in awe. Holiday Hosting Tips by Elizabeth Scokin 1. The Perfect Table Setting: A beautifully set table is the canvas for a delicious meal. Incorporate elegant table dressings such as pave sequin placemats and duchess satin napkins from Haute Hostess combined with fragrant Christmas greens, berries, white orchids and candles. A couple of Southern “MUSTS” are homemade divinity, chocolate meringue pie, and ambrosia. Lastly, don’t forget a top-drawer bar that includes Pappy Van Winkle and great wines such as Brunello di Montalcino and Caymus. 2. A Haute Hostess Approved Guest List: The perfect holiday party starts with a thoughtful guest list. Family and close friends come first – remember who you are as you are surrounded by your loved ones, that is the Southern way. Send out invitations three to four weeks in advance as calendars fill up fast around the holiday season. PaperlessPost.com has chic invitations that are also eco-friendly! 3. Dress to Impress: To look sexy yet tasteful, understated glamour ala Audrey Hepburn is my style. A sheath dress, pearl and diamond earrings, heavy gold charm bracelet, black velvet pointed toe pumps with a slim 4 inch heel, and a glam Haute Hostess Apron. 4. Keeping Your Guests Entertained, without Cell Phones! Once cocktails are flowing and guests are full, bring out board games for some old school fun. Among family and friends, my favorite game is to ask everyone to tell their favorite Christmas adventure from childhood based upon one of the trinkets contained in the English Christmas Crackers, which are set at their dinner setting. Or, start a revolving Christmas Tale by beginning a story and having each person around the table adding to the tale. Set time limits and have a small egg timer. 5. The Element of Surprise: Bonus Tip: Add a little sparkle to your party. Use your spare bathroom for a champagne bar…champagne bottles in a sparkling clean bathroom with oodles of ice and an attendant to pour the bubbly in sleek champagne glasses for your delightfully surprised guests is a surefire winner! Meet Jaina Lee Ortiz of FOX’s Rosewood

November-December Issue 2015 By Gisel Habibnejad Professional salsa dancer, makeup artist, and actress—Jaina Lee Ortiz can do it all. She began her career with dance lessons at the age of nine, and then proceeded to travel the world as an instructor and performer by the time she was 15. Soon after, she returned to her true love of acting. The Puerto Rican-American actress began by appearing in student films and studied at the Maggie Flannigan Studio. She made her theatrical debut in an off-Broadway show before being cast in VH1’s season two of Scream Queens, a reality show with nine actresses competing for a role in an upcoming film in which Jaina placed first runner-up. Currently, she stars opposite Morris Chestnut as homicide Detective Villa in FOX’s Rosewood. The show follows the life of Dr. Rosewood, a private pathologist living with an illness leading him to live his life with a positive outlook. Dr. Rosewood and Detective Villa work side-by-side solving murders together and learning about life along the way. MSM: When and how did you realize you wanted to make the transition from professional salsa dancing to acting? Would you ever star in a dance film? Jaina Lee Ortiz: It was about the time I was 21. I was traveling internationally performing and teaching salsa. I envisioned myself having a dance studio, but I didn’t want to be a dancer for the rest of my life. I said to myself, “Let me return to studying student film and actually take it seriously.” That’s when I quit dancing for good. I would love to do the remake of Flashdance. That would definitely bring back a lot of memories. MSM: What was the road to success like as a Puerto Rican-American in the acting business? JO: I never spoke any Spanish growing up, so the challenging part was having to audition for roles in Spanish. People thought: “You’re Puerto Rican, you speak Spanish.” But I guess I could make up for it because I can dance [Laughs]. MSM: Which actor or actress would you like to work with most? JO: I would love to work with Paul Giamatti and Viola Davis. MSM: What similarities and differences do you share with Detective Villa on Rosewood? JO: I’m very much like Detective Villa in that she is tough and strong-willed. I can relate to her drive and determination. I also feel a special connection because my dad was a homicidal detective for the Bronx. But I’m more optimistic than she is, she can be a bit closed-minded and pessimistic. MSM: How much does your character grow throughout the season? JO: She has a lot going on. This woman is struggling emotionally; she has a lot of personal issues she’s dealing with. You sort of find Villa in a very dark place in her life and she’s on this road of hope and happiness, because there are so many things that are missing in her life, like love and family. She hides that void in her work, but she’s going to grow throughout the season. She’s going to become a better person, be more optimistic, and see the glass half full. MSM: Have you learned any valuable lessons from the show? JO: Yes, in terms of Dr. Rosewood’s character, he has an illness so he cherishes every moment in life. I think it helps to remind yourself every day that tomorrow is not guaranteed. You have to live today as if it were your last, you never know what’s going to happen, so be grateful, be humble, and be appreciative of everything you have. GlobeIn: Inspiration in a Box

November-December Issue 2015 By Gisel Habibnejad In recent years, subscription boxes have increased in popularity. The reason is most likely attributed to the element of surprise. Because of this, customers can receive a self-paid gift every month—not just on birthdays or holidays. Who can blame them for that? Gift yourself a handcrafted present while helping others through GlobeIn. Essentially, their mission is to grant artisans global reach. “GlobeIn empowers female artisans from around the globe to bring their handcrafted products to the international market, and provides them the opportunity for financial stability and growth,” says Sepideh Nasiri, Chief Business Officer of GlobeIn. They make a living by hand-making products, located in countries such as Mexico, Sri Lanka, South Sudan, and Ghana. Those who subscribe or purchase from GlobeIn also help bring monetary support for these groups, who mostly live in the economically underdeveloped area of their country. The company connects these talented artisan groups with the world in order to keep their culture alive. “Since inception, GlobeIn has helped thousands of consumers discover a robust collection of artisanal products while enabling people in over 40 countries to attain a higher quality of life,” shares Nasiri. Each box comes with a basket weaved in Oaxaca, Mexico. This city harbors a small group of artisan peoples made of 50% of Mexico’s indigenous speaking population. The Oaxacan weavers are made up of three groups, supporting 30+ cooperating artisans in total. “One of our co-founders was traveling in Mexico looking for artisans and discovered the artisan who was making the baskets in a market in Oaxaca, we grew this from one artisan to currently 30,” explains Nasiri. The first group is split into two under Marina López: Don Juan García López and Doña Selerina García Lucas. Don Juan and his entire family work together to make a living through agriculture and weaving. Doña Selerina and her group live in a very poor town located in Sierra Sur. Doña Martina leads the third group, and thanks to GlobeIn, she is able to work from home to spend more time with her family and take care of her children. While each basket weaver has a unique background, how the baskets are made tell a special story in itself. The artisans begin by collecting palm leaves from the hills then letting them dry in the sun for three days before scratching them with a knife to remove the cuticle. Next, the leaves are dyed; however, the white and yellow leaves are already in their natural colors. Lastly, each basket takes up to 2-3 hours to weave. The baskets can be used as décor, storage, or as potted plant holders. When you receive a basket, you will get to know the artisan makers responsible for your products while learning where they come from. Who says you have to travel to grow your cultural intelligence? There are 10 themes to choose from when purchasing a box/subscription. The Wander Box was made for those who love to travel the world. It contains a mosquito repellant, travel journal, drawstring backpack, moringa bar, and a palm leaf basket. For a wonderful excuse to enjoy a picnic, The Picnic Box holds a tri bento and napkin set, sunstick, dried mango, and a palm leaf basket. Lastly, The Wellness Box persuades you to relax and take care of your body, enclosing an eye pillow, blessing bag, baobab powder, gift card to watsi.org, and a palm leaf basket. These boxes are all made up of goods from India, Brazil, Peru, and Benin. You can also purchase individual products, like hand-painted mugs and candles, coasters, and framed art. Create your own box by purchasing three or more items to get a free basket. For more information, please visit www.globein.com Click here to view this post in the MSM November/December 2015 issue

My Miami: Natalie Gal

November-December Issue 2015 Photographed by Catherine Asanov Natalie Gal is an American actress and model. She was born in 1989 to the family of an opera singer and a poet. Not surprisingly, she started studying ballet, gymnastics, arts, along with playing piano, singing, and performing in a theatre at the age of six. She is often compared to a young Angelina Jolie, considered to be a very promising young actress by media and magazines. She studied acting at NYU and speaks four languages fluently. Not only is Natalie represented by top model agencies around the world, but is also actively involved in various charities that are near to her heart, such as Artists for Peace and Justice and has done several campaigns for PETA. In September 2010, she was chosen to be the chairman of People Power Progress (PPP). She lives between NYC and LA, produces her TV show Fashion Destinations (airing on FashionTV), hosts a show on NEWTV, produces projects in Los Angeles and frequently travels to several cities around the world for work. She has starred in different movie productions and modeled for different brands such as Chanel, Cavalli, Alexander Wang, Prada, CoverGirl, Guess, Diesel, Alexander McQueen, and Revlon. She’s been on the covers of Grazia, Mademoiselle, Madam Figaro, and Modern Luxury to name a few. Currently she made a switch from modeling to acting, while still being an ambassador for many brands. She produces and stars in features with actors such as Samuel Jackson, Lindsay Lohan, Amber Heard and Kelan Lutz. Natalie recently hit the big screen in Jobs and Syrup. She is currently in the process of filming Enter The Fist with Danny Trejo. Since she is a self-proclaimed Miami lover, we couldn’t wait to hear the details… When in Miami you can catch me… Usually shopping! I enjoy all the Miami stores, little boutiques in all corners of the city, vintage shops in Wynwood Art District, or outside of SoBe. Of course, you also have to hit the big fancy ones, like Bal Harbour. After the shopping, I’m usually poolside at the Delano Hotel. I cannot tell you how many celebrities I spot during my visits there – so if you care for high-end people watching, then this is your place to stay. The biggest misconception about Miami is… That South Beach is the only place to be. I love Wynwood, Little Havana, Coral Gables, the Design District, and Coconut Grove. I am a big location junkie for my photo shoots and I typically ask a photographer or art director if we can shoot somewhere interesting, old, weird, or local. So I personally check out those locations on the mission to find interesting places to shoot, and Miami has so many! The last restaurant I enjoyed in Miami was… Juvia and Zuma all the way! I fell in love with Zuma when I first visited in London. It’s a hot spot for very attractive people (in case you want to meet a few wink-wink!). If you haven’t already, I dare you to order a few cocktails there, they are outstanding. Aside from the weather, the best reason to return to Miami is… There’s always something happening, music, art, fashion, and with new people. Of course, for me it’s Art Basel and Miami Fashion Week. Soho House is swarmed with people and hot outfits during MFW. I usually stay at SLS for MFW and get the most fantastic experience! For Art Basel, people come from all over the world to buy and celebrate art – its the best time to meet someone fun and interesting and get inspired by their talents. The first time I became really curious about Miami was… It was during my time as an up-and-coming, fresh-out-of-old-Europe model. I was instantly in love! I remember I went to the local coffee shop and everyone spoke Spanish there, which made the city appeal even worldlier to me. Then I was bedazzled by the Art Deco style, the atmosphere, the people, and then of course the hot nightlife. Miami felt instantly like the total package.
