Never Before Seen Photographs of David Bowie Debuted in Design District

By Alyse Mier Photography by World Red Eye Markowicz Fine Art Gallery and celebrity photographer and director Markus Klinko collaborated on an exhibit that pays tribute to late pop culture icon David Bowie. The exhibit debuted on February 25th and features 14 never before seen photographs of Bowie, who passed away earlier this year. The photographs were meant to represent Bowie’s “strength and wild side” and are symbolic of the different phases throughout Bowie’s lifetime. Klinko’s cover photo for Bowie’s 2002 album, Heathen, is also on display. “Before creating the album cover Bowie invited me to the recording studio to listen to the album. The album was going to be released a year after 9/11 and Bowie’s idea for the album cover was for it to convey a somber feeling. That’s why he has that mask over his eyes,” said Klinko. The exhibit will travel nationwide, but Bowie’s creative spirit will live on in Miami through mid-March. “Bowie was an exceptional man to work with. He knew precisely what he wanted and was very photogenic,” said Klinko. For more information, please visit www.markowiczfineart.com

Martini Shake Off at the Raleigh Hotel

By Alyse Mier The Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach hosted its monthly Cocktail Shake Off on February 5th. Guests sampled a variety of specialty cocktails and voted for their preferred drink. The cocktail with the most votes will be featured in the Martini Bar’s menu for the month of February. This month’s competition featured Famous Grouse, a medium full flavored whiskey with notes of oak, sherry and citrus that played a central part in many of the cocktails. Stephen Wicker, the bartender, blended unique ingredients such as egg whites, bitters, coconut demerara and almond milk into the rich amber cocktails, which left guests ordering full sizes of their favorite sample. The winner and our personal favorite was the Scotchtail, a refreshing, light amber libation made up of Famous Grouse Scotch, coconut demerara, agave nectar, lemon juice and orange bitters. Shake off this winter weather at the Raleigh Hotel’s Martini Bar. For more information, please visit www.raleighhotel.com

Psychic Matchmaker Urges Women To “Get Their Head Out Of Their Apps”

By Alyse Mier Deborah Graham, better known as the Psychic Matchmaker from TLC, shared her advice on the challenges of dating in the digital age in her new book Get Your Head Out of Your Apps. Graham did a Q&A session with women and men during a happy hour at Books and Books about the importance of connecting with someone spiritually. “The premise of the book is to teach people how to communicate, teach people how to open up and follow my rule of three (three dates and three months of monogamy). What’s different about this book is that I teach you how to use that part of your brain that can connect with someone spiritually and use it to reach a higher frequency.” Graham also shared her gift with some women who were looking for answers on where and how to find love in an age dominated by nonverbal communication and offered them sound advice on steps they needed to take on completing and getting in tune with themselves. A Workout of EPIC Proportions

By Alyse Mier Photography by Courtney Ortiz, Courtney Studios Ten people hurtle through an obstacle course simulation, shimmying up ropes, swinging from monkey bars, jumping on and off five-foot boxes, crawling under imaginary barbed wire, all searching for their limits. These athletes, from all sorts of disciplines, are congregating at EPIC Hybrid Training Gym with the owner Alexander Nicholas cheering them on. “I opened EPIC Hybrid Training in March of 2012 because I felt the fitness industry needed a change. The camaraderie, grit, and tenacity of this growing population of obstacle racers is exciting and infectious. I get more pleasure out of helping others perform at their best and always find challenging new ways to motivate members at EPIC,” said Nicholas. At EPIC, gym goers can choose from seven workouts, one for every day of the week, with the choices rotating monthly. Every Wednesday during January, the gym is offering EPIC Obstacle Circuits, a class in which participants will hoist wreck bags on their shoulders, jump on and off five foot boxes, crawl across the gym with a power wheel and traverse along the monkey bars and rings. Come February, the workout routine you’ve grown familiar with could be moved to Tuesday, which allows an attendee to explore other workout options, like the Blast routines where participants can work on their push ups and progress from doing a push up on their knees to a plyometric push up, or clapping push up. Whether you are an obstacle race professional or a beginner that has never participated in an obstacle race, EPIC classes offer many levels so every participant can feel challenged and empowered. “I love programs where you can progress, see the progression, but then after four weeks you get to start on something new. You’re always learning new things, but you also have time to work on what you’ve been practicing,” said Nicholas. Nicholas showed a passion for fitness at a young age, and opened EPIC in 2012, in search of a program that he could truly connect to. He began competing in obstacle races and eventually won the first Spartan Stadium Race at Fenway Park, as part of the original Reebok Spartan Race Pro Team. He also went on to compete on Spike TV’s Sweat Inc. “The challenges of these races bring out the best in me, as well as the ability to motivate so many people to get in better shape,” said Nicholas. For Nicholas, EPIC Hybrid Training in Brickell is only the beginning of a list of long-term goals. “The message I want everyone to know is that EPIC is for everyone. It can look very intimidating, but there are levels for everybody from beginner to advanced. It’s a very doable program for anyone who wants to come in, work hard and better himself or herself,” said Nicholas. EPIC Hybrid Training is located at 620 S Miami Ave, Miami, FL 33130 For more information, please visit www.epichybridtraining.com Click here to view this post in the MSM January/February 2016 digital issue

The Filling Station: Reimagining American Bar Food

A long-time fixture in Miami, it recently found a new home in Oakland Park, it’s still dedicated to taking the typical hamburger and making it anything but typical. With over 60 food items to choose from on the menu and a selection of over 30 craft beers, it’s no doubt you’ll need a few minutes to process everything. Below is a list of some must have menu items: The Lazy Sunday An unusual blend of S’tart sour beer and Sprite makes for one of the most refreshing drinks, which is perfect for this South Florida weather. The Beer Flight Having trouble navigating through the beer options? Bartender, Mitchell Feigeles, will create a personalized beer flight based on your preferred flavor profile. He’ll also create a flight of the best creations brewed by local breweries. Sweet Corn Fritters Imagine popcorn reinvented. These sweet corn fritters are perfect little portions of creamed corn fried to golden perfection and served with their made in house Savannah Sauce. The tots are blanketed with a layer of smoked pulled pork, cheddar cheese sauce and sour cream. Red Dot Art Fair: One of Miami’s Leading Art Fairs

By Alyse Mier Red Dot Art Fair, one of Art Basel and Miami Art Week’s leading shows, returned to Miami this past weekend for its 9th edition. Its new location in the Arts and Entertainment District served as the temporary home for modern and contemporary works of art. This event has served as a platform to introduce enthusiasts and collectors to established, mid-career and emerging artists, much like Benjamin Edelstein. Edelstein, a Miami native, specializes in both fine art and commercial photography. His work has been published in several advertising campaigns, and graced the pages of leading magazines such as Vogue. Red Dot gave Edelstein the opportunity to present his work side-by-side to exquisite and sometimes bizarre works of art. “I’ve seen some pretty cool contemporary work around here. I’m a fan of mixed media. Anything that has to do with more than just photography or painting, or finding ways to incorporate both I’m usually a pretty big fan of,” said Edelstein. Red Dot’s vast collection of modern and contemporary art did not disappoint as fairgoers made their way through the over 70 galleries that exhibited numerous sculptures, paintings and photographs. “This is my second year here at Red Dot and it’s been a bit of a whirlwind. Long days, long hours, but what I appreciate most about being here is that I not only get to see a lot of the galleries that are present, but I get to meet a lot of the artists that aren’t from around here,” said Edelstein. SWAY: A Dance Trilogy

By Alyse Mier Photography by Stefania Orru Latin ballroom dancing champion Maksim Chmerkovskiy, known by millions for his performances on Dancing With the Stars, brought some ballroom dancing heat to Miami this week with the opening of SWAY: A Dance Trilogy. Maksim and Valentin Chmerkovskiy, and Tony Dovolani were joined by DWTS professional Peta Murgatroyd, Olympian Meryl Davis and actress Rumer Willis for a five-show run at the historic Olympia Theater in downtown Miami. SWAY gave the audience a glimpse into the lives of Maks, Val and Dovolani and their varied talents in dance genres such as conventional ballroom, hip-hop, rumba, salsa and cha cha. “SWAY was born because we had the opportunity to do it. It was choreographed in-house by two of our Dance With Me choreographers and the cast was made up of over 70 employees from our six locations. It quickly became a show that was bigger than us and we decided to do it two more times. Now we’re in Miami performing only five shows during Art Basel,” said Maks. Maks and Dance With Me Studios have partnered with Alfalit in efforts to eradicate human suffering caused by illiteracy. Dance With Me Studios has used its platform with SWAY to help create awareness for this cause. A percentage of ticket sales from SWAY, associated golf tournament and dance camp benefitted Alfalit International. “Without education we wouldn’t be able to do what we do, so I wanted to be able to give back to people who don’t have that opportunity themselves,” said Maks.
