One On One With GiGi Diaz

She’s on your radio, leading networking events and speaking at summits everywhere. She’s GiGi Diaz, a Cuban born, iHeartRadio personality, serial entrepreneur and Mindset & Business Coach for women. The positive vibes she spreads with each professional hat she wears has earned the moniker of The Conscious Influencer and she lives up to it daily. GiGi Diaz is on air on 939MIA in Miami, Mia 92-1 in West Palm Beach and in multiple other markets throughout the United States. Her first business, a dance studio called GiGi’s Academy, was founded in 2003 right after she graduated from high school and was recently ranked Top 3 Dance Studios in its city. Her second business, Seizing Happy, is a Mindset & Business Coaching Program dedicated to teaching women how to tap into their inner happiness source to lead more empowered and purposeful lives. It offers networking events, one-on-one coaching, courses and workshops. We sat with this busy bee for a few questions and here’s what we learned. With all that you do, how you keep it all afloat? I can confidently say I am a time management queen! When I was much younger I literally worked myself into an urgent care. I was losing my hair, had break outs all over my skin, and while driving from one job to another, one day I practically lost my vision in the middle of the highway. It was really scary. To make a long story short, after getting checked out my doctor pretty much told me I was working myself sick. That day changed everything for me and taught me that no matter how passionate, driven, or eager you are to achieve the success you dream of, you need to put yourself first. I manage my time by listing tasks, then prioritizing them, then delegating what I can and giving myself a deadline to complete the tasks I keep for myself. Even though it looks like I’m doing 100 things all the time, I focus on only one big project at a time. What causes you stress and how do you overcome it? A lot of my stress comes from overthinking and uncertainty about what’s coming up. If I’m planning an event, launching a new course or workshop I tend to overthink and worry. I know this happens to a lot of people. Breathing is an instant stress reducer for me. When I feel the stress creeping I stop whatever I’m doing and do some mindful breathing. I inhale for 4 seconds, hold it for 3 seconds and exhale for 5 seconds. I repeat this a few times trying to make the exhale longer each time. This slows down my thinking, my heart rate, and allows me to step away from the stress to look at everything more clearly. I meditate every morning for a few minutes and I do it again every night before bed. This has helped me tremendously with clarity, anxiety, and unnecessary worry. Is there a mantra or quote that helps you thrive? Yes! I’ve been closing my shows with “la felicidad es una decision” for years! It translates to “happiness is a choice.” I feel that when your happiness is found within, no one and nothing can take it from you. When you seek joy in life and within yourself, instead of in outside influences, you own that happiness. It’s unshakable. I love affirmations too, I use them every day. I even made my own affirmations eBook to share with friends and it was such a hit I started offering it to clients too. What tip do you have for those people trying to launch a side hustle? I tell my clients this all the time: KNOW YOUR WHY. Why are you doing this? Whatever that answer is, ask WHY again, and again, until you get to the root of why you want to do this. Knowing your deepest reason why is what’s going to keep you motivated when you’re tired and disciplined when you fail (and, yes, you will fail, probably many times). Independence, financial freedom, and reasons similar to those are good, but go deeper. Way deeper. What is the biggest mistake people make when launching? There are so many! I have an entire episode of my Chats with GiGi podcast dedicated to this question! But I’ll go with the first that came to mind when you asked: investing in the wrong things. A lot of launching entrepreneurs spend a ton of money on website designs, business cards, and other aesthetic things. The most important investment to make when launching is in guidance so you avoid as many mistakes as possible. I have spent thousands on coaching and it’s exponentially grown my business. The other investment I think that is very important is delegating! You need to spend your time creating and SELLING, not worrying about the daily tasks of entrepreneurship. I know investing in these things sounds like a luxury to many, but it’s my expert advice, what has worked for me and what works for other successful entrepreneurs. Talking to GiGi was a treat. She’s passionate, energetic and in love with what she does. You can find her on Instagram as @GiGiDiazLIVE, learn more about her at gigidiaz.com and listen to her on 939MIA, Mia 92-1, RUMBA and on the CHATS with GiGi podcast on the free iHeartRadio app.

Interview: Disney Junior’s Genevieve Goings

Interviewed by Destinee Hughes / Photo’s by Jacory Gums Genevieve Goings, the host of Disney Junior’s popular music video show “Choo Choo Soul,” knows exactly how to woo an all-age audience. Whether she’s using her charismatic personality to charm the children, writing music for Los Angeles’s top R&B and pop artist, or creating unique bow-ties and suspenders, Goings always exceed expectations in the most harmonious of ways. With a musical lineage, Goings had a natural inclination for singing from an early start. She began her career in San Francisco, focusing mainly on hip-hop and R&B, singing hooks for local artist. She eventually ventured off into recording voice-overs for popular toy companies such as Hello Kitty, Leapfrog, and many more. In April 2010, she and her skilled team created “The Happy Hearts Club,” a fitness show for kids exposing them to futuristic dance moves to help keep them engaged in physical movement. Goings has also worked with Fisher-Price on its “Little People” toy line. While she was initially approached to write a new theme song for the brand, her innovative ideas and dedication allowed her to write six additional songs and even provide the voice for the teacher, Miss Hugg, in the animated web-series. It’s safe to say that being the host for “Choo Choo Soul” for over a decade has certainly opened many doors for children’s market opportunities for Goings. Genevieve currently has her hand in numerous pots, including writing phonics curriculum’s for schools in China. Her latest venture is absolutely one worth looking forward to- an original line of bow-ties, ties, and suspenders for kids. If one thing is certain it’s clear that Genevieve is undeniably talented, and with fitting last name, she knows exactly where her future is going. Destiny Hughes: When did you realize that you wanted to be involved in the entertainment industry? Genevieve Goings: I have always had an interest in the Entertainment Business, and from a very young age I loved singing and performing. I didn’t, however, think that I could ACTUALLY do it as my profession until I finished high school and began recording in studios. Watching a song start as an idea and take on its own life; being pressed into CD’s, moving to radio and being produced into music videos, live shows, and more, I was hooked! DH: How do you balance working on so many projects at once? GG: I am still learning that perfect balance! I try to dedicate certain days to certain things, and mornings are always for emails and social media. I write all of my to-do’s on my calendar and just schedule my focus throughout the day. I add time for creative and goal-oriented items just as if they were an appointment. DH:  What interests you the most in children’s television shows? GG: I just love the fact that there is no wrong or right way to do it. Random silliness can totally work in the kids space. Children are so open, honest and willing to be entertained. It is truly the best job ever! DH: What has been the most satisfying part about your job? GG: I truly get to touch people’s lives with what I do. I have been on television regularly for over 10 years now, and those little babies who used to watch me are now grown and onto other things, utilizing those fundamentals that they learned from my songs! I love to hear from parents about how so many special memories were created with their families to my music. I have heard from parents of non-verbal autistic children saying that their children sing along to my music! It is truly incredible and so much more than me just wanting to be a “star,” this is real-life stuff that means something! DH: How does it feel when people recognize your voice from previous works? GG: Ahh, it’s the best! I feel wonderful if someone recognizes my voice!! That means I am on the right path and creating a brand! DH: Why is it important to you to keep children healthy and active with your “Happy Hearts Club” program? GG: Our habits that we form as children shape our lives and livelihood as we grow up! Childhood obesity, diabetes and more are silent villains that can cause major harm to our youth. I felt that since I have a direct portal to these kids and they know me as someone who the get up and dance with, it was my job to keep that flow going and help them exercise! DH: Tell us about the musical curriculum your writing for schools in China? GG: It is a little-known fact that Disney has created an initiative called “Disney English,” which teaches English as a second language in China and beyond. They have over 20 schools in China and I have written over 100 lesson songs for them, utilizing their target vocabulary and a bit of “Disney Magic.” I take the words and phrases that they are learning, and create a pop-style song in the theme of whatever Disney character or brand that the lesson exists in. For example, if the class is learning about “Time” in the style of “The Lion King,” I will write a song with African-inspired sounds and beats using the words that they require. It is such an incredible project and exercise for a songwriter! It is also magical to see the finished product, when they pair my song with clips from the classic films! DH: If you weren’t the host for Disney Junior’s Choo Choo Soul, what other career would you have? GG: This has been my focus for so long, I don’t even know how to answer that! But if I wasn’t on screen, I would be on my way to being an executive at Disney. If I wasn’t in the Children’s market at all, I would probably still be in the entertainment business, writing music for other artsts. I probably would have continued with the band that I was in (Legato; neo-soul R&B) and continued in the Video game voice-over industry.

Tyla Durden on Miami

Tyla Durden is taking the post modern music scene by storm. After MTV Europe started to air her video “SexLoveMusicFashion”, Tyla Durden became an instant sensation. Her new Album TH3 OR1G1N4L is hyped as a masterpiece and her talents are validated in many arenas: she is a highly published photographer with top ad campaigns under her belt, a praised stylist, director, writer, musician and simply a woman with great vision. Almost the minute the Swiss beauty dropped her new post-modern Album, she got the attention of the US music scene, hence Tyla living a jetset life now between two continents working on her first US tour and several high profile collaborations. We were so happy to learn that Miami was her place of inspiration and wanted to find out more. When in Miami you  may catch me at…. …the beach or in an art gallery. For example at Daniela Wicki’s Gallery Second Avenue in Wynwood. She’s Swiss Origin as well and I admire her art and influence. Or you may catch me of course at Art Basel… This Art fair has its roots as well in switzerland. You see, Switzerland and miami have a wonderful marriage in some case. The biggest misconception about Miami is… …that Miami is just about having a party. It’s much more than that. For me this place means a lot of inspiring emotions. When i first visit Miami in 2008 I had this warm, pure wanderlust feeling inside of me. Knowing I can reach everything. This creative, openminded and cool place is fullfilled with great ideas and innovative people. The last restaurant I enjoyed in Miami was…. …at the Otentic Fresh Food Restaurant, Washington Ave. Fresh food, a cozy atmosphere and I must confess – a little European flair – there I feel most comfortable. Portions are also for small European-bellies, like mine and the desserts are divine. You feel like God in France. What surprised me about Miami was… …that Miami Beach has the worlds largest Art Deco architecture collection. I always knew there are a lot of beautiful buildings along the beach, but I was surprised how many nice Art Deco photo subjects I would find there. Miami with it’s over 800 Art Deco Buildings represents art, architecture and culture. For me as a Photographer and Filmmaker is this pure inspiration. It’s not surprising that so many movies and songs are about Miami. Best reason to return to Miami aside from the weather? Miami is riding a wave of technology and optimism that brings smart and risk-taking heads from other cities and country’s to dare a new business. For example, I heard they would like to make a new Silicon Valley. I am very interested in technology, science, art and music. As head of a private company, I know how much courage it takes to create something. Risk tolerance, courage and a good idea are just the beginning. Lots of patience and determination are the prerequisites. I know Miami is a place where such forward ideas are allowed to grow. This is a great reason to come here again and again, to see what’s new. First time I became really curious about Miami was …? Sometime around 2001 I just finished my Art School in Switzerland and started my education as an Advertising Photographer. I started dreaming of Miami – because my Photographer Idol Helmut Newton made stunning pictures there at the beach which exerted a huge influence on me and my art to this day. Then I heard that the Art Basel takes place in Miami now, I also remembered the movies Bad Boys, Scarface, Donnie Brasco and that’s when I knew I had to go there. What happens in Miami stays in Miami…and  our magazine. Any  secret  or funny moment you ‘d like to share about you and this city? My funny moment: When I woke up after my first Night in a hotel at Miami Beach on Ocean Drive, I checked out if there is some hidden money behind my ceiling fan. I felt like I live a life in the Scarface movie. My secret: During the massive volcano eruption 2010 in Iceland, I had to stay in Miami 2 weeks more than planned because we couldn’t fly back. So we stayed after our 2 weeks of vacation 4 weeks total. We rent a hotel apartment in north Miami Beach. It was a spectacular decorated hotel, probably had its best times in the 1970s. We knew there where good parties going on in the good old Cocain Cowboys times. We stayed there and had a good time. Enjoyed the beach, we listened to a lot of music and I had to admit I tried out some drugs. But I never had a desire to do drugs consistently. So it was a onetime adventure. I’m an Artist and a dedicated creative – I like to play hard, but I love to work harder.

Julio Iglesias, Jr.: World Tour with His Father, Family Life, & What’s Next

September-October Issue 2015 MIAMI NATIVE & SPANISH SINGER REVEALS WHAT IT’S LIKE BEING ON TOUR WITH HIS FATHER, GROWING UP AS AN ‘IGLESIAS,’ & WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR HIM By Gisel Habibnejad Photographed by Ernesto Poblacion With musical talent running through his veins, it’s safe to say Julio Iglesias, Jr. was born to grace the world with his gift. Throughout his lifetime and various works, music has always remained a constant. There’s no denying the greatness that awaits Julio in the near future with a new album in the works and joining his father on his world tour, among the many. Julio was born to Spanish music icon Julio Iglesias, and Filipina socialite and journalist Isabel Preysler. Growing up, his parents instilled morals and values that molded him into the person he is today. “My dad taught me the importance of working hard in anything you do in life and to always surround yourself with great people.” Having a popular singer as a father also had its perks. “When I was younger, I saw my father like any young boy sees his father. As I got older, I began to realize that my father was famous. It was always nice to hear my friends and their parents express how they love my father’s music,” says the singer. “It’s a great feeling when people appreciate what your parents do.” Although he doesn’t plan on having children in the near future, he can’t wait to instill his family values into his future offspring. “I value good people with big hearts, family, friends, and music.” As Julio grew older, his passion for music blossomed and he soon realized his purpose in life. “Growing up in a musically-inclined family, you learn to really appreciate it.” While it would be easy to assume Julio broke into show business through music, it was actually through his modeling career. With several campaigns under his belt, his most notable include: Versace and Gap. Soon after, he ventured off into other aspects of the industry. He displayed his dance moves on the Spanish version of Dancing with the Stars known as ¡Mira Quien Baila! He then went on to win the first season of Gone Country, featuring various celebrities from different genre backgrounds competing to become a country singer. However, the most memorable of his TV stints has to be his frequent appearances on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show. Somewhere between his modeling career and television shows, Julio toured and became the opening act of Cher’s Do You Believe? 1999 North American tour. Most recently, Julio recorded the album Latin Lovers, featuring various artists coming together to create a compilation covering popular Spanish music hits. Along with Nuno Resende and Damien Sargue, Julio performed several of these covers at numerous concerts throughout Europe. Among the popular singles are “Vous Les Femmes,” an original by his father, “La Camisa Negra,” and “Livin’ La Vida Loca.” When he’s not touring or traveling all over the world, he’s in Miami–the place he has called home for most of his life. Julio was born in Spain, but moved to our beloved city when he was a child. Ever since, it has held a special place in his heart. “My family and friends live here. There’s nothing better than that.” An ideal day for Julio is relaxing by the beach and playing tennis. “The great thing about Miami is that you never get bored here; the city is always expanding. There’s always something to do.” However, ‘home is where the heart is’ and his heart belongs to his beautiful wife, Charisse Verhaert. Charisse and Julio began dating 12 years ago and finally tied the knot in 2011. “I love my wife, she’s an amazing woman. I’m very blessed to have her by my side,” says Julio about the Belgian model. While he’s usually touring overseas, some of his favorite destinations are within our very boarders. He takes delight in making occasional trips to the Florida Keys and spending time in his vacation home. Besides boating and kite boarding, the drive itself brings him bliss. “The spectacular view of the ocean on both sides when crossing the Seven Mile Bridge really makes the long drive worth it.” Having attended Menlo College near San Francisco, Julio grew affection towards Northern California, which he visits at least four times a year. One of his favorite places on the west coast is Lake Tahoe. During the winter, he can’t get enough of snowboarding; while in the summer, he enjoys the quiet beaches. Earlier this year, it was announced Julio would be joining his father on his world tour. Their first official performance together took place on May 22nd in Romania. Bulgaria, Spain, and Portugal were among the other countries that followed. In September, he will perform alongside his father in Guadalajara, Santiago de Querétaro, Mérida, Yucatán, Hermosillo, Puebla, and Monterrey in Mexico. In November and December, he looks forward to touring in Asia. “It’s a great experience because I get to spend a lot of quality time with my father. To share a stage with him in front of 20,000 people has been a dream come true.” As for a concert in Miami, locals should be on the look out for an upcoming performance down the road. With this in mind, we had to ask: are there any future plans for a performance with Julio, his father, and Enrique? We were pleasantly surprised to find the answer to be yes. Whenever this occurs, it is sure to make history! We were especially excited to learn that Julio has begun writing and recording songs for his next Spanish solo album, which will be released next spring. Everyone will be able to get to know Julio on a personal level like never before, and he can’t wait to share it with the world. Top Recruiter Miami Is Big Business

DOWN TO BUSINESS WITH CREATIVE DIRECTOR & EXECUTIVE PRODUCER CHRIS LAVOIE What is your position within the show Top Recruiter? I am the Creator & Executive Producer of the show. What is the show Top Recruiter about? Top Recruiter is a reality series – where 6 recruiters come together and take on a series of challenges based on the job market. We aim to showcase the process of what happens behind the scenes of a recruiters job. Through that process, we want to give job seekers some insight and tricks of the trade so they may implement some in their job hunting endeavors. Plus there’s great drama between these huge personalities. What category does Top Recruiter fall under in reality TV, is it a planned or a followed story? I am a big fan of the “unexpected”! This is the reason why we have no script on set. As the executive producer, I read the human behavior on set and develop the day’s filming format. How did you come up with the idea of Top Recruiter? The idea of Top Recruiter was born in the dawn of the recession. We realized then, like many people did, that things were about to change- quickly. We also realized that while many people were losing their jobs and homes, there were other opportunities as a direct result of this recession. We knew that many people simply did not have the inside knowledge that a recruiter has. We wanted to deliver this information in a way that was entertaining so that people would watch and learn and hopefully apply the information to their situation and thrive. There was so much doom and gloom hovering over us as a country that we really felt something should be done. I have always had a passion for film, I just took my two passions and married them. What’s the process of casting your stars? 1. The single most important characteristic is knowledge base. For us, we want the show to be credible. We want to educate and only people with real expertise can really do that, right? 2. Secondly, this is a show – and shows need to be entertaining to keep any attention by the viewer. So we look for bold personalities who don’t cringe at the sight of a camera. They simply need to be comfortable in front of the camera, not everyone can do that. 3. Confidence, Confidence, Confidence!! What job markets do Top Recruiters target? EVERY Industry. What are your Top Recruiters competing for amongst each other? The “reputation” of being the world’s best. Every winner has seen a tremendous elevation in their career and personal brand. Once a winner is selected what is the Grand Prize? A dinner with me. Did I just say that?! Seriously, they win something pretty – Job Security They really could work at any Fortune 500 company if they wanted to. Just as long as they still perform to their abilities. Has Top Recruiter Miami achieved the success you were hoping for? We couldn’t be happier with the achievements of Top Recruiter. We set out to help a very important industry at a very important time in our country’s history. We feel that we helped shed some light on how to get ourselves out of a rut. There have been a number of publications that have been written about the show, and in them, I find the meaning of success. What inspires you the most in making your business decisions? As I turn 40 years old, I want to work on projects that make sense in 2 areas. One, it needs to “move” me. I need to be “turned” on. There needs to be a “risk” factor. Secondly, it needs to make sense financially. Since I will be working 95% of the time raising the funds for each reality series or film I am working on – I need to see that my time is valued. I perform at a high standard and expect nothing less. Do you have any plans for other reality shows in the near future? Yes, I am working on raising funds for Social Media Stars Reality Series.
