The Festival of Trees: Shed a Leaf for Interior Architecture

By Michèle Bigler With Halloween around the corner, the holiday season has officially kicked off and you know what that means, time to take out your calendar and mark the most noteworthy events of the season. It’s a difficult time because you’ll be forced to pick and choose from a long list of momentous happenings, but not to worry, MSM has scanned some of them for you and will be providing you with the ultimate culture guide for the season. To kick off the myriad of events we’ve hand picked the 29th Festival of Trees a yearly fundraising in honor of the students at the Interior Architecture Department at FIU.  November 19th marks the 29th fundraiser in which all profits go to the Department of Interior Architecture (9th best in the United States). Those of you looking to succor the Arts and assist South Florida in escalating its artistic flourishing, this is the place for you to give back to the academic community. Head over to the iconic Moore Building for innovative tree designs donned by local designers and maybe bid on one while you’re there or just gawk at the pieces and the protagonist of the edifice: an interwoven installation by renowned architect Zaha Hadid. Her attempt to connect each floor symbolically suggests a transgression of borders that hits close to home in Miami and resembles a hypnotizing concrete grapevine.  Themes in the past have been known to “both compliment and contradict our period” and always “attempt to bring in what concerns our world today” according to previous attendees. Start your holiday season by spectating the work of and mingling with the best designers in South Florida, relishing spectacular cuisine and sipping a few liquid infusions. On the Road to Miss Universe 2014

By Gisel Habibnejad As we watch the Miss Universe contestants gather on stage, it is easy to forget the hard work and determination each beauty has put into winning the prestigious honor of representing her own country. Each one has a unique and inspiring story to tell. For Jimena Espinoza, the reigning Miss Peru Universe, her strength lies within the absolute support provided by her family. Through their love and encouragement she was able to overcome childhood bullies and used it to channel the power within to achieve her ultimate dreams of modeling and competing for the prestigious title of Miss Universe. Jimena stopped by MSM’s offices for a photoshoot and a one on one interview: MSM: What inspired you to want to become Miss Peru Universe? JE: I have been inspired since my childhood as I used to watch beauty pageant competitions on television. Growing up, I really started to love the idea that I could represent my country and use my name to make positive changes in people’s lives and especially women in so many different aspects. MSM: How much preparation goes into a beauty pageant, especially for this competition? JE: There is a lot of preparation required in many areas, not only in physical appearance but nutritional, health, photography, speech, and emotional training. MSM: What is your favorite part about winning the prestigious title of Miss Peru Universe so far? JE: My favorite part is receiving the support and love of the people of my country and to use the title of Miss Peru Universe to capture the attention of different people or organizations in order to provide social assistance to those in need. It’s an enormous honor and also a huge responsibility to have the ability to hold such a prestigious crown that can open so many doors for so many good causes I feel strongly about. MSM: What separates the Peruvian culture from the rest of the world? JE: So many things separate the Peruvian culture from the rest of the world, such as our rich history as we are the birthplace of the great Inca Empire. But most commonly known is our world famous cuisine. Peru has created a name for itself in the culinary world for it’s special flavors, spices, and freshest ingredients. MSM: What is your favorite Peruvian tradition? JE: A tradition that is very close to my heart and that I still participate in, along with my loved ones, is the procession of the Lord of Miracles every October. It’s just so magical because everyone dresses in purple all month as a symbol of faith and parades around town. It’s a time when you feel united, happy, and so grateful for all the miracles in our lives. MSM: What is one beauty product you can’t leave your house without? JE: I cannot leave my house without a good sunscreen, because the most important thing is to look after your skin and protect it from the damages of the sun. It keeps you looking young and radiant. MSM: Do you have a signature makeup look? JE: Yes, I always like to keep my makeup looking as fresh and natural as possible. MSM: What is it about Miami that you love the most? JE: I like the warmth of its people and multi-cultural side, its beautiful beaches and lovely climate are an added bonus. MSM: As a child, you were bullied for being tall. How did you overcome those bullies? Do you think winning Miss Universe will help you spread awareness towards this social issue? JE: I overcame being bullied due to the love and support of my family, especially my parents. I have always had a great relationship with them and was able to speak to them openly and that really gave me the strength to overcome it. They gave me the confidence to believe in myself and to be tolerant and compassionate towards the world around me. I learned to appreciate different people and make the most of situations. My height allowed me to participate in many sports activities and later to follow my dreams of modeling. I most definitely believe that Miss Universe will help me not only spread awareness of this horrible subject but also to create support groups for other young children so they always feel like they have someone to speak to the way I was able to. The best way to do this is to tell my story and show the world that being different is not a bad thing after all. MSM: What would it mean to you to win the title of Miss Universe 2014? JE: The culmination of a dream and the beginning of new challenges, responsibilities for myself, to my country, and the world. I have no words to express the joy and pride it would mean to me. The Miss Universe Pageant will be taking place on Sunday, January 25th at Florida International University, located at 11200 Southwest 8th Street, Miami, FL 33199.   Photography by IMANI OGDEN Wardrobe by CACHE DESIGNS Makeup by ARTURO RODRIGUEZ (CHRISTIAN DIOR)   Click here to view post on the January/February 2015 issue.

The Third Annual BrewFest hosted by FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management

FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management recently hosted their third annual South Florida BrewFest. With more than 400 attendees, the one-day festival consisted of more than 30 of Florida’s best breweries and proudly demonstrated the growing cultural impact craft beers is currently having on South Florida’s social scene. Along with the special events surrounding beer tasting, event goers were able to experience and take a tour of the university’s new brewing science lab.     Among the many events that took place within the festival were: Beer Tasting 101 with Barry Gump, Ph.D. (Professor, Eminent Scholar, FIU Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management), Beer and Food Paring with Luis Brignoni (Founder of Wynwood Brewing Company) and Juan Carlos Lopategui (Corporate Chef at Casavana), and Intro to Beer Brewing with Dustin Jeffer (Co-Founder/Head Brewer of Saltwater Brewery).     Former students of the school were also hands-on during the festival. David Rodriguez (Wynwood Brewing Company) and Jake Lindsay (Daddy Brews) served their signature beers while sharing their knowledge on the flavors and general craft beer information. We can’t wait to see what’s in-store for next year’s Brewfest!

Daniela Ramirez: On Taking Nany’s Klozet to The Next Level

By Nycole Sariol/Photographed by Imani Ogden When word got out that Miami’s number one fashion blogger, Daniela Ramirez, launched her own capsule collection with Venezuelan brand, Melao, local fashion denizens of Miami and the rest of her 209k followers couldn’t wait to slip one of her ten designs on. However, it was only a matter of time until the personal style blogger stepped out from in front of the camera to have a whack at other endeavors past lending out style advice. “Your blog should be a platform for your portfolio,” the 25-year old creator of Nany’s Klozet said, aiming her baby-browns up toward the ceiling of MSM’s headquarters, while getting her makeup touched up just moments before her photo shoot.  Though known mostly or her mash-up remixes of exemplifying ten different ways to wear the same red and black plaid pants (believe me, it can be done), the Venezuelan native affirms that there’s more out there than just taking street style photos in front of one of Wynwood’s graffiti-laden walls. So, “testing the waters” in the design-pool seemed like the obvious next step in the right direction towards expanding her highly sought-after blog. “I thought it was perfect timing,” Ramirez says. The collection, carried online and at local chain boutique, Blush, is comprised of easy-to-wear pieces such as flirty drop waist skirts, basic button ups, and monochromatic colorways in damask prints. Sounds simple enough. But that was, after all, the purpose of its conception – versatility for everyone. “There’s a 1,000 different ways you can wear it,” Ramirez explains of the entirety of the collection. Aside from shooting to make her collabo-collection fun for all, she also takes into consideration the ballin’-on-a-budget minded. “One of the pieces is, like, $39 bucks,” referring to the collection’s reasonably low price points. Still, while this is her first time collaborating to design and coin her own collection, this is certainly not her first time working side-by-side with other brands. “Right now, I’m collaborating with Nordstrom Rack, too. The prices are great,” she adds. “And I always work with Target; they’re fun.” But perhaps the most befitting team-up following her capsule creation has to be the matrimonial coming together with cosmetic brand, L’Oréal. “I’m doing a bridal makeup video with L’Oréal for my wedding,” Ramirez speaks of her special-day-to be with her fiancé and boyfriend of seven years, Gabriel Sanchez. The two lovebirds met while attending college at FIU and have been inseparable ever since. So inseparable, in fact, that the budding couple even works together – Sanchez as her cool boyfriend photographer. With prominent accolades already under her belt like international recognition, being a proud mother of a coveted capsule collection, and of course marrying the longtime love of her life, what’s left for a girl to do? Apparently, publishing her own book would ensue. “It’s going to be something like my remix section on the blog,” where she re-works one piece into several different outfits using none other than exclusive pieces by Melao. Is there anything this renaissance woman of the fashion world can’t do? Evidently not. Click here to view post on the July/August 2014 issue.
