GETTING AWAY DURING THE PANDEMIC

By Nadja Atwal In for the long haul or just a quick trip? Here is how to prepare … I guess we can already predict the words of the year for 2020: “Corona” and “Lockdown” will be in the top 5 for sure, no matter what happens next. Are you counting down the days until you fly to somewhere near or far (wherever they let you in without quarantine) or take that train to “anywhere but home”? Of course we love our own city, but too much of a good thing is also in the “too much “ category. While booking our trips most of us experience that new mix of positive excitement and volatile fear of the unknown. As a result we roam the net in search of gadgets and tools to keep us safer (from the virus). “People are looking very much for things like the perfect mask and sanitizers and that is all useful, but strengthening your immune system is also a vital key to staying healthy,” says medical doctor Stefanie Seyda who has been researching and working on immune supporting formulas. If you read about beneficial supplements on that front, Vitamin C and Zinc have been touted as must haves and must takes . Am I overlooking something? “ Indeed,” says Seyda “Vitamin D, folate and vitamin A and vitamin B6 and B12 have shown clear immune boosting effects in recent studies.” If you are looking for that new discovery that is being (rightfully)  hyped as a great inner shield against the virus, Seyda refers to the recent studies on resveratrol. Yes, that resveratrol that has been already touted as a great anti-aging agent which is being found in grapes and even red wine? “ Yes,” says Seyda, “but please, don’t let this knowledge lead you to the next wine bar now or fill your cellar with red wine. Alcohol intake is lowering your immune response. So stick to a good supplement for real benefits of Resveratrol”. Now as for new must have travel items: if you book a flight or train ride, you think about face masks. Especially for longer flights make sure it is not just protecting you but very breathable, as you may face many hours of wearing it. For a reusable option with a Vogue-ish fashion statement, check out En Avance, the multi-brand concept store showcasing global designers came to the Miami Design District in 2006 and has taken it by storm. Also remember that the virus can enter through the eyes and sadly too often does in places that many people share. So no matter what mask you choose, it should be worn with either a face shield or protective glasses that also protect the corner of your eyes – no just the front. For ladies the My Face Shield by Miami based fashion label Touchdolls is a great option and has a more colorful version for kids. When you board a plane, have the sanitizing wipes ready to give your arm rests and the tray ! A good disinfecting wipe down, unless you carry a tray cover like Airplane Pockets (which won the NTA ’s ” best travel accessory of the year award” 2019) A must have is a disposable seat cover like the disposable ones from Seet Cuvers are a steady companion in frequent flyer travel bags now. If you’d rather choose a reusable product, opt for the washable (and truly gorgeous) ones by NiceSeats Wherever this summer will take you, staying healthy and happy requires: staying safe.

Never Before Seen Photographs of David Bowie Debuted in Design District

By Alyse Mier Photography by World Red Eye Markowicz Fine Art Gallery and celebrity photographer and director Markus Klinko collaborated on an exhibit that pays tribute to late pop culture icon David Bowie. The exhibit debuted on February 25th and features 14 never before seen photographs of Bowie, who passed away earlier this year. The photographs were meant to represent Bowie’s “strength and wild side” and are symbolic of the different phases throughout Bowie’s lifetime. Klinko’s cover photo for Bowie’s 2002 album, Heathen, is also on display. “Before creating the album cover Bowie invited me to the recording studio to listen to the album. The album was going to be released a year after 9/11 and Bowie’s idea for the album cover was for it to convey a somber feeling. That’s why he has that mask over his eyes,” said Klinko. The exhibit will travel nationwide, but Bowie’s creative spirit will live on in Miami through mid-March. “Bowie was an exceptional man to work with. He knew precisely what he wanted and was very photogenic,” said Klinko. For more information, please visit www.markowiczfineart.com

Craig Robins: A Not So Secret Love Affair with Art

November-December Issue 2015 By Angela Betancourt Before they were turned into charming boutique hotels, before they were restaurants, before they gained worldwide fame and recognition, the Art Deco District was merely a series of run-down buildings facing an uncertain future. If it wasn’t for the vision and determination of a few pioneering individuals, who saw this historic district for its potential, the Miami Beach we know today would not exist. One of these visionaries is Craig Robins, a real estate developer, philanthropist, and art enthusiast that has made a massive impact in Miami’s real estate, culture, and art landscape. Robins is also the Founder and CEO of Dacra, a real estate company that is constantly propelling Miami into the future. Robins’ vision for the Art Deco District was unprecedented. He began investing in South Beach real estate in the 1980s and steadily restored iconic properties to their original grandeur. As the neighborhood began to thrive and flourish, Robins set his eyes across the bridge. He is the man behind the Miami Design District (MDD) which has become a famed neighborhood in its own right. Less than 30 years ago the MDD was the neglected area of the city you wouldn’t want to get caught in walking around at night. Today, the MDD is a destination that’s home to numerous restaurants, galleries, artists, luxury retail brands, and innovative businesses. “When we set out to revitalize and reinvent the District, our goal was to cultivate an atmosphere where creativity could flourish, regardless of its specific label or medium. These artistic endeavors are all vital components of the fabric of the Design District – the value systems informing each are remarkably similar, with an emphasis on craft, quality, and a profound commitment to expressing a creative vision,” he shared. One of the first things Robins and his team did was to bring back the element of furniture design in order to compete with a nearby business. The move paid off and as new buildings were created; heavy hitters in the design world began setting up showrooms. Robins also fostered an environment of creativity and innovation by providing artists with studio space. “As the neighborhood became known as a laboratory for creativity, we hosted events like the annual Art Loves Design party to celebrate those flourishing creative disciplines. We created public art installations by Marc Newson, Jose Bedia and Zaha Hadid among others,” he said. It wasn’t long before leading fashion brands took notice of the neighborhood’s new personality. The MDD soon welcomed Marni, Christian Louboutin, Maison Martin Margiela, and others. There are currently more than 50 luxury fashion brands in the neighborhood with brands like Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Isabel Marant, Loro Piana, Tod’s and Van Cleef & Arpels expected in 2016. “While the revitalization of the neighborhood began with a cultivation of design showrooms and art collections of international significance, fashion was always part of my vision for the Design District,” said Robins. While two of Miami’s most important neighborhoods were being physically transformed, a creative metamorphosis was simultaneously taking shape: the emergence of Miami’s art scene. Robins’ passion for the arts transcends beyond his personal life and into his work. He even positioned Dacra to be a real estate development firm “that uses architecture, art, design and cultural programming to build creative international destinations.” He speaks of art not in the way of colors on a canvas or molded form; it comes from a much deeper place. “I am instinctive in choosing art, but my life is an interaction between intuitive impulses and a conscious mind, one checks the other. When I become interested in an artist, I tend to collect their work in depth. For more than a decade I have been working with Jack Tilton, who has been the single greatest influence on me as an art collector. Jack is one of the most insightful people working in the art world today, he gave me the confidence to work harder on building my collection”. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Robins is also the Principle of the leading international design show Design Miami and is also responsible for introducing Miami Art Basel to the city. Art Basel has now become one of the largest art fairs in the world; featuring more than 200 galleries and attracting thousands of visitors each year. Miami Art Basel takes place over one week in December. During this time, the amount of events being hosted around the city is almost maddening. Each year it gets even larger. The act of attending all of these events, also known as Art Baseling, is not for the weak of spirit. Robins’ take on it is pretty accurate: “Trying to get ready for Art Basel Miami Beach – it’s a kind of endurance event that you have to train for.” Though Miami Art Basel only comes once a year, Robins believes in creating events and programs that will keep the community more engaged in the arts year round. The MDD currently has a diverse arts and culture program that seeks to constantly engage the community across a variety of art platforms. Some of the initiatives include a lecture series, an art day for families, a six week live music series called District Sounds, and a Site-Specific Performance Series that takes the performance out of the traditional theater and into the neighborhood. “As our base of important cultural institutions grows here in the Miami Design District, so has our ability to connect the community with distinguished artists, curators, critics and cultural figures. The lecture series offered at the de la Cruz Collection, the ICA/Miami and Locust Projects (exhibition space) both engages and inspires conversations within the Miami arts community.” Each event is carefully curated to further an understanding of contemporary art and to allow the artist to engage with the audience in unexpected ways. By breaking from the traditional, the community has an opportunity to experience art in more unusual and interactive ways. The programs and events are designed to make art accessible to everyone. The Festival of Trees: Shed a Leaf for Interior Architecture

By Michèle Bigler With Halloween around the corner, the holiday season has officially kicked off and you know what that means, time to take out your calendar and mark the most noteworthy events of the season. It’s a difficult time because you’ll be forced to pick and choose from a long list of momentous happenings, but not to worry, MSM has scanned some of them for you and will be providing you with the ultimate culture guide for the season. To kick off the myriad of events we’ve hand picked the 29th Festival of Trees a yearly fundraising in honor of the students at the Interior Architecture Department at FIU.  November 19th marks the 29th fundraiser in which all profits go to the Department of Interior Architecture (9th best in the United States). Those of you looking to succor the Arts and assist South Florida in escalating its artistic flourishing, this is the place for you to give back to the academic community. Head over to the iconic Moore Building for innovative tree designs donned by local designers and maybe bid on one while you’re there or just gawk at the pieces and the protagonist of the edifice: an interwoven installation by renowned architect Zaha Hadid. Her attempt to connect each floor symbolically suggests a transgression of borders that hits close to home in Miami and resembles a hypnotizing concrete grapevine.  Themes in the past have been known to “both compliment and contradict our period” and always “attempt to bring in what concerns our world today” according to previous attendees. Start your holiday season by spectating the work of and mingling with the best designers in South Florida, relishing spectacular cuisine and sipping a few liquid infusions.
