Una Noche Buena at CENA by Michy

By Justina Coronel James Beard Award Winner Chef Michelle Bernstein brings Miami a taste from different cultures, a natural touch of flavorful ingredients, and a delicious flair of soulful cooking with the opening of CENA by Michy on Biscayne Boulevard. Bernstein cooks what she truly enjoys and that transfers gracefully onto the dishes that she prepares. Bernstein is a Miami native of Jewish and Latin descent who brings adventurous, yet simplistic recipes to the menu. CENA, which translates from Latin as “the most important meal of the day,” is a neighborhood restaurant that travels guests into a world of incredible flavors and world-taste wonders. This modern-day feel restaurant with an open concept view of the kitchen has a beautiful gold exquisite piece of art on the wall that encourages all guests to enjoy its beautiful delicacies. The bar is welcoming with multiple cocktail concoctions to serve such as the Cena Bramble and the Michy-lada. The Cena Bramble is shaken with either vodka or gin with lemon juice then strained over crushed ice topped with aperol laced peach-rhubarb compote. The Michy-lada has a little kick with baby bell and hot peppers with sour and navel orange that attains charred papaya shrub, spiced pomegranate and citrus, and then finally topped with estrella damm beer with an ancho chili smoked salt rim. The perfect way to cool down after this zesty drink is with the scrumptious food. Through her one-of-a-kind appetizers, Bernstein puts her own unique pizazz into the vegetable starters. The Beet Sorghum Risotto has roast beets with the added touch of horseradish crème fraiche; now you can’t ‘beet’ that! The Creamy Polenta has crunchy yet perfectly cooked brussel sprouts covered with a l’ekema oil slow poached egg. Bernstein tops the vegetable starters with a Cauliflower Steak that is pickled with garlic aioli, marconas, raisins, and capers, oh my! The best way to top off your dining experience is with a signature dinner dish, the Harissa Lamb Spare Ribs. It is deliciously cooked on la parilla with sumac yogurt smudge and tanzeya slow cooked fruit. This feel good restaurant embraces Bernstein’s colorful personality and her true dedication to good food. Make sure to indulge and enjoy the most important meal of the day at CENA by Michy. CENA by Michy is located at 6927 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33138 For more information, please visit www.cenabymichy.com Click here to view this post in the September/October 2015 digital issue Click here to view the online issue

Miami International Airport Welcomes American Express Centurion Lounge

By Gisel Habibnejad Photography Courtesy of American Express Do you have a fear of flying? American Express cardholders not only hold a card, they now hold the solution too. Last month, the American Express Centurion Lounge opened at the Miami International Airport. Now, flyers have a place to relax before and in-between flights. Located at the North Terminal near Gate D14, the lounge and all its amenities are complimentary for Amex Platinum and Centurion cardholders. For all other Amex cardholders, a $50 day pass must be purchased. Not too shabby! Upon entrance, guests are instantly greeted with a beautiful backdrop of the Amex signature luscious greenery at the front desk. It is only a few steps away from the Exhale Spa, made-up of 15-minute services such as chair massages, acupuncture, and mini manicures. Beyond that, the lounge area includes a bar, tables with seating, and couches for comfort. But who can forget that breathtaking view of the runway where you can watch airplanes takeoff and land? Across the way, a floor-to-ceiling window playroom for children is available where parents can watch from the lounge area. The bar comes equipped with a bartender who is ready to fix-up signature cocktails, or serve top shelf premium spirits and wines. Guests will also enjoy delicious meals by Miami’s very own chef Michelle Bernstein – so you know you can expect nothing less than top-rated dishes. Among the various options are: sour cream pancakes with candied pecans and caramelized bananas for breakfast; slow braised short rib of beef with natural jus and green faro as an entrée; and banana tres leches with dulce de leche pudding and fresh cream for dessert. Frequent flyers will be pleased to know the menu items rotate often. A conference room and several workspaces are dedicated to the business inclined, where flyers have a quiet area to work and also have access to high-speed Wi-Fi (available throughout the lounge). Personal computers, printers, fax and copy machines, and buffers to filter out the noise are among the other amenities available for use. In addition, guests can freshen up with shower suites and have access to luggage lockers. If that wasn’t enough, Amex concierge services are available to assist with flight information, changes, and future trip planning at your request. The 8,000 sq ft Centurion Lounge really commits to satisfying every need in order to ensure a relaxing atmosphere. You can find other American Express Centurion Lounges in Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, New York’s La Guardia Airport, and San Francisco International Airport. Each location contains artwork specific to the culture found at each destination. As you might’ve guessed, Miami’s is pleasantly decorated with photographs of Latin artists such as Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull. Michelle Bernstein: Girl Boss de Cuisine

By Nycole Sariol To most, she’s revered as Michelle Bernstein, James Beard Award Winning Chef and reality TV show regular. But to the voracious diners of South Florida who know her best, she goes by simply Michy. And while Bernstein has continuously wowed the nation with her deft cooking repertoire and covetable line-up of restaurants, it’s her most recent dining concept, Seagrape, showering the top toque with mass acclaim and etching yet another notch in her belt of world-class menus as of late. Taking precious time from her back-to-back schedule, we fiendishly chatted up Michelle about her newest brassier-turned-baby to hit Miami Beach’s Thompson hotel, Michy’s renovations, and how she manages to defend her title as the ultimate girl boss of the kitchen. MSM sits down with Michy to find out what she’s been up to: MSM: Let’s talk about your newest venture on the Miami Beach dining scene: Seagrape and it’s menu. What are some coveted plates that will whet our appetites there? MB: Seagrape at Thompson Miami Beach has really been an exciting project for David – my husband and business partner – and I. The menu is inspired by everything that makes Florida so wonderful like fresh seafood and beautiful produce. Some of our top-selling dishes since opening have been the Crispy Skin Florida Snapper, Braised Short Rib, Spanish Octopus a la Plancha, and the Ellensburg Lamb Chops. MSM: Seagrape is now ripe for the pickin’, having opened its doors late last month. What’s the crowd been like? Garnering any local love, or has it all been the jet-setting type? Reveal. MB: We’re thrilled that we’ve had such a successful opening. During Art Basel we were slammed with visitors in town as well as locals who were out and about checking out all of the fun events. We see a little bit of everything being on Collins, we love all of our guests and are happy to warmly welcome them! MSM: What of Michy’s? It’s temporarily closed due to its face-lift-heard-round-the-world. What sort of face-lifts are we talking about: drastic Joan Rivers style, or subtle like Christie Brinkley? There’s a difference. MB: Joan Rivers if she had fixed her feet up! It’s a new kitchen for me, new dining room for my husband and guests; new pipes, new walls, new everything! MSM: Random question time: Isn’t it ironic how society has always pegged women as laborers in the kitchen, yet men arguably have been recognized for dominating the modern- day culinary scene as Chefs de Cuisine? What’s it like being a woman cooking in a man’s kitchen? MB: I can’t speak for other women in the industry. The ratio of women I’ve seen in culinary schools is around 50%, but the actual percentage that becomes or remains a chef is pretty low. MSM: Speaking of being a lady within a testosterone driven industry: you’ve been knighted with a James Beard Award for Best Chef in South Florida; judged and mentored on Bravo’s Top Chef; and come on, how could we forget that one time when you slayed Bobby Flay on Iron Chef – truly a wonder to behold. What is the impetus behind such vociferous success? What’s your next plan of attack? MB: I figure its 50% luck and 50% good timing! I am driven, passionate and very, very disciplined but if it weren’t for my family and my amazing staff I wouldn’t be very successful!
