Keeping Up with Alonzo Mourning

By Zachary Devita Photography by Claudio Beier Alonzo Mourning will always be remembered as the NBA player who put himself on the map for his passion and hard work on the hardwood. During his career, he was a seven-time NBA All-Star, a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and won an NBA Championship in 2006 with the Miami Heat. When he retired in 2009 at the age of 38, his number, 33, became the only retired number in Heat history. One of the most influential figures during his time in the NBA is former Heat coach and current Team President Pat Riley. “I’m a little biased, but it has to be Pat Riley. While he’s known for his strategic coaching tactics, to his players he was a motivator but not only that, he got the best out of his players. And I think that’s a key to being a great coach, not just drawing up a great play. I think it’s about you getting your players to believe in the plan you’ve set out,” shared Alonzo. Retirement hasn’t stopped Alonzo from being involved with the NBA and the Miami Heat. “I’m the Vice President of Player Programs and Development for the Miami Heat, which consumes a lot of my time.” Beyond being involved with the Miami Heat, Alonzo has been working tirelessly with the Mourning Family Foundation, which he established in 1997. The mission of the charity is to help the development of children and families living in at-risk situations and providing support and services that will enhance their lives. “There’s a hole that needs to be filled as it pertains to all the obstacles that young people are trying to overcome. We just have to accept responsibility and understand that what it really comes down to is helping young people accomplish their goals.” Alonzo has also partnered with the Warren Henry Auto Group to benefit his non-profit organizations. Some of these special events included sponsoring a donation drive to assist in collecting toys, gifts, and donations that were gifted to students of the Toys for Tots program, in which Warren Henry Auto Group has participated in for several years. They also assisted in the Back to School Drive, which involved being a location point that collected school supplies for children in need. Although retirement keeps him busy, Alonzo still misses some nuances and parts of the game. “I miss the comradery more than anything. The playoffs were something that I used to look forward to and I loved to compete at that level. But the long and short of it, I miss the competitiveness and being around my teammates.” For now, Alonzo continues to build his strong relationship with the community around him and push the young players on the Miami Heat for a bright future for not only themselves, but for the team as well. Brianne Goutal Prepares to Compete at the Longines Global Champions Tour

Equestrian sports are the only Olympic sport where men and women are able to compete on equal terms against each other. The Longines Global Champions Tour at Miami Beach in April will bring together the Top 30 ranked show jumpers in the world to compete at a unique location, on the beach. Leading American female show jumper, Brianne Goutal has taken this sport to a new level with her drive, passion and dedication. Goutal remains the only rider to ever win all four major equitation finals documented in Animal Planet’s reality show, Horse Power: Road to the Maclay. The equitation finals included: the 2004 USEF Show Jumping Talent Search Finals-East, the 2004 Washington International Equitation Final, the 2005 USEF/Pessoa Hunter Seat Medal Final, and the 2005 ASPCA Maclay National Championship. The same year, she claimed individual and young rider gold at the North American Young Rider Championships. Goutal turned professional and balanced her riding commitments with classes at Brown University. She graduated in 2012 with a literature degree. Not only does Goutal have a rigorous six days a week riding schedule, but also she trains four other top riders. “I love teaching. I’m able to reap the benefits from the fact that it forces me to become more aware of my own riding,” states Brianne Goutal. “I enjoy working with my students and helping them work through issues more than commanding lessons.” Brianne has quite a full life out of the saddle. She splits her time living in New York City and Wellington, Florida taking time in between horse shows to travel. “Life is all about balance,” says Goutal. “Having the opportunity to break away from my daily routine and be able to enjoy time with my family and friends, is the best way to clear my head and prepare for the next show.” For more information on Brianne Goutal, click here

Carnival Season is in Full Swing!

By Dawn Wilson Since Carnival is in full swing, we decided to mention the things that are commonly found at Carnival festivals in the Caribbean and in North America. J’Ouvert: This is the pre-carnival parade, which kicks off Carnival. Music: The music that is commonly played during the festival is Dancehall, Zouk and Calypso. Mas: This is the big parade that takes place on Carnival Tuesday! Top Caribbean Carnivals in the Caribbean: Cayman Islands (May) Although the Cayman Islands Carnival festival isn’t as old as some of the others, it has become widely popular in a short amount of time. It began as a way to celebrate the history of its African residents, along with the mix of other cultures, who now call the Cayman Islands home. St. Vincent & The Grenadines (June/July) What you can expect to see when you attend here is steel pan performers, J’Ouvert (pre-carnival party parade), a beauty pageant, and more. The dancing is infectious, so make sure you get plenty of rest and bring comfortable shoes. There is a good chance that other partiers won’t let you leave, you’ll be dancing until the sun comes up. Top Caribbean Carnivals in North America: Toronto (July) This is said to be the largest of its kind in North America. It attracts over a million visitors yearly. Like the festivals held in the Caribbean islands, you can still expect to see band performances, extravagant parades, interesting costumes, lots of dancing and music. Miami (October) If you are looking for something fun and exciting to do during Columbus Day weekend, stay in Miami for our annual Caribbean Carnival festival, One Carnival. It is a celebration of the Caribbean culture, art heritage and traditions. There are masquerade balls, parades and plenty of cuisine represented by the many islands of the Caribbean.

Fresh is Better: Healthy Eating Made Simple

By Gisel Habibnejad In Miami, living busy lives with fast-paced schedules leave little room for healthy meals due to time constraints. Fresh is Better has developed the ultimate solution for this—a daily gourmet meal delivery system that guarantees flavorful healthy options. The company is dedicated to making your life easier by providing convenient options from its delivery style to ready-to-eat meals. Not only this, their never-frozen philosophy stays true to customers: “We believe in living in a sustainable way, so wherever possible our fresh fruits and vegetables are grown locally and without the use of pesticides. The lean protein is hormone and antibiotic free, the fresh seafood is mostly caught right in the Florida waters, and even our compostable delivery containers were chosen with an eye to our responsibilities to the environment.” So how do you get started? You begin by choosing your preferred meal plan (Traditional, Paleo, Vegetarian, or Gluten-free). Next, select how many meals you wish to receive daily (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and two snacks). You can also pick between three meal sizes (trim, lifestyle, or pro) and indicate if you have any food allergies.
