Louis Amanti: Rising Star

Photography Courtesy of AR Entertainment Louis Amanti has mastered the art of song renditions with over 450 songs and 500 shows. The humbled South Florida native hit 1 million views on YouTube just last year with his outstanding vocals on Nat King Cole’s “L.O.V.E.” Being a 24-year-old in a genre made popular by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, and Dean Martin makes this rising star stand out amongst this generation. This fall, he will release his first album with Grammy Award winning songwriter Rudy Perez—there’s no telling the amount of success Louis will reach before he reaches 25. MSM: Tell us how your passion for the classic songs from the famous crooners such as Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, came about at such a young age? Louis Amanti: You know that’s a question I get asked a lot, it’s funny because they tell me that when I was a little kid coming out of the hospital the day I was born “Frank Sinatra Live at the Sands” was playing in the car on the way back home. So I kinda feel like it was meant for me to sing since the beginning. With lots of credit to my grandparents, for teaching me all the great songs and artists of the great 20th century. MSM: At what age did you start singing and performing? LA: I can’t remember exactly when I started singing because the journey goes way back, but I do remember that I couldn’t stop singing at home, during baseball practices, in class and of course in the shower. During middle school at the end of the year awards, my teachers gave me an award for best singer and when I walked to pick up my award up on stage they made me sing in front of all the students and parents and the first song I ever sang in public was “Strangers In The Night,” and that’s where the bug bit me. MSM: You are just 24 years old, people your age like hip hop, dance, pop, techno, rock, music…how does it differ with you? Do you enjoy performing and listening to other types of music? LA: Absolutely, I love music that is great. Doesn’t matter if it’s hip hop or rock or EDM. Music is music and if you add quality and love to what you’re doing only greatness can come out of it. Having said that I am attracted to romantic music and there’s nothing more that I enjoy than beautiful melodies and lyrics. MSM: You have a song on YouTube, Nat King Cole’s “L.O.V.E.” which has gotten over 1 million views, tell us about why you recorded this and when? LA: I recorded “L.O.V.E.” two days before Valentine’s Day. I grew up listening to Nat and I always thought the way he would deliver a lyric and his phrasing was personal. Growing up “L.O.V.E.” was that one song I would think of as the theme song for Valentine’s Day. I recorded the song and made a nice little quick video the same day and posted it the day before Feb 14th. I am truly honored and blessed that it has touched so many people around the world. MSM: You look like a Hollywood heartthrob, will Louis Amanti get the acting bug? LA: You never know. My life is music, but I would not mind having the possibility of pursuing that one day. MSM: What’s next for Louis Amanti? LA: There’s a lot of great plans coming up. God has been good to me and I am lucky to be able to do what I love for a living. I expect to keep singing and giving the best of me for a long time. For more information, please visit www.louisamanti.com To watch Louis’ rendition of Nat King Cole’s “L.O.V.E.”, click here

Miami Real Estyle – Tropical Modern Architecture with Ralph Choeff

By Angela Betancourt Award-winning architect Ralph Choeff is one of the leaders of the Tropical Modern architectural movements in South Florida. Along with his partners at the Choeff Levy Fischman Architecture & Design firm, the team has mastered the art of Tropical Modern architecture. They’ve designed some of the most celebrated homes and hotels in the city; including the Mondrian South Beach Hotel and The Anglers Hotel, both in South Beach. One of their recent projects, the Rivo Alto Island Residence in Miami Beach, is a stunning example of how well Tropical Modern architecture plays into its surroundings. The home blends the interior with the exterior by using tall and expansive windows and sliding glass doors for maximum views and enjoyment. The interior of the home radiates a Zen-like atmosphere that, as Choeff would describe it, takes the owner to a place outside the experience of the day-to-day. A native New Yorker, Choeff moved to Miami in 1978 after graduating from the Pratt Institute with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. “I believed that Miami was ready to experience real architectural growth after being stagnant for many years. I felt Miami gave me the best opportunity to succeed and offered the weather I desired,” he said. And succeed he did. Choeff has become a highly sought-after architect and has been commissioned by many celebrities and VIP’s including Cher, Matt Damon, Barry Gibb, Alex Rodriguez and many others. His work has been featured on national TV programs such as the Today Show and in various high profile design magazines like Hospitality Design. His name has become synonymous with Tropical Modern architecture in South Florida. “My biggest professional accomplishment today, I believe, is how far I have come in the evolution of my professional career and how I approach design. I am proud to have been one of the leaders in the movement of Tropical Modern architecture in South Florida,” shared Choeff. Choeff’s success in this space evolved from his love of modern architecture. In college, he began to admire the work of Walter Gropius, a German architect known as one of the pioneers of modern architecture who was also the founder of the Bauhaus School. “The modern glass skyscrapers of NYC were inspirational to me. When I moved to South Florida, I yearned for the opportunity to produce modern architecture. Once I got that and started designing modern buildings, tropical architecture evolved when technology allowed us to create vast and tall sliding glass door openings which also allowed us to take advantage of our climate. Tropical Modern architecture was a natural evolution that stemmed from that,” he said. As this New Year begins to unfold, Choeff will undoubtedly continue to make strides. He is very excited about all of the firm’s current and upcoming projects and has high ambitions for the future. His ultimate dream project is to build something so successful it will gain enough notoriety to positively inspire the industry and that is one more thing he can be proud of. Shane Battier: Taking Charge

By Zachary Devita Photography by Aldo Arguello Former Miami Heat player Shane Battier and his wife, Heidi, established the Battier Take Charge Foundation around six years ago and have been an integral and popular part of the Miami and Coral Gables community. “I’m a proud Miamian. I live here locally in Coral Gables and we’ve established roots here. This is home, so, I think it’s the responsibility of not just me, but everybody, to be a part of their community. To do what they can to make it better.” The Battier Take Charge Foundation mission revolves around helping troubled youth by providing the necessary tools and resources to gain a good education and develop into effective leaders in society. “When I made it to the NBA, when I made it big, I felt like it was my duty to be able to afford access and opportunity to those who needed it. We are providing a great opportunity to unlock these kids’ dreams through the power of a college education.” The foundation has graduated three kids to this point, and hold another 15 within the program and have placed them all over the country. Last month, Shane hosted the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Village of Merrick Park in cooperation with the Battier Take Charge Foundation. When asked about the Christmas Wonderland the Village put on, Shane said, “This is a fun celebratory event…when I was asked to lead the tree lighting celebration, I took it as a huge honor!” Shane’s illustrious basketball career spans back from winning a college national championship at Duke as well as Naismith College Player of the Year back in 2001 and culminated when he won back-to-back championships with the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013. The key to his success? His parents. “They were instrumental in helping me develop into the person I am today. They instilled in me a sense of gratitude, community and an unbelievable work ethic. There’s no question I wouldn’t be here without their guidance.” Although Shane has been retired for over a year now, there are still things about the game of basketball he misses. “I miss the subtle battles in a game. The in-game adjustments you have to make against Kevin Durant, or Carmelo Anthony or some of the greatest players in the world. The small battles that really are never picked on television, that you know that you’ve won or you’ve lost in the heat of it all.” While the small battles may be over, Shane hasn’t shied away from the world of sports in retirement. “As an old retired player now I’ve taken up golf. I’m merely a single digit handicapper and so I’ve worked really hard on that. I’m improving and it’s been a fun journey.” Along with golf, Shane has put a strong focus on the foundation and expanding its efforts and events in and beyond South Florida. “Everyone in Miami knows about the success of Battier-oke. That’s been a lot of fun to bring down here and we’ve had a huge level of support for that. We’re looking to grow as a foundation, looking to add programming, looking to add more kids. There are a lot of great kids in our county and in South Florida that just need the access, need examples and need to be told, hey, someone cares about you.” As of right now the foundation is up to standards according to Shane, but their work is never done and they are looking to add more within the community. Despite the fame and the fortune that comes with a career like his, Shane remains humble, always willing to help those around him. This remains evident when asked what piece of advice he would give to future basketball players who want a career similar to his. “Learn to love to work. If you enjoy the work, then you’ll have no problem putting in the extra time it takes to make yourself a great basketball player and unlock your full potential.” It’s no surprise that Shane loved his work on the court, but it’s his work off the court that will continue his legacy for years to come. Village of Merrick Park Kicked off Christmas with Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony

By Zachary Devita Illuminated with colorful bulbs, children wearing reindeer antlers and the echoing sounds of holiday music, the Village of Merrick Park kicked off Christmas in South Florida with their Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. Hosted by former Miami Heat player Shane Battier and the Battier Take Charge Foundation, the night included performances by Coral Gables Senior High School, the Miami Royal Ballet and even a special visit from jolly old Saint Nick. Shane and his wife, Heidi, established the Battier Take Charge Foundation around six years ago and have been an integral and popular part of the Miami and Coral Gables community. “I’m a proud Miamian. I live here locally in Coral Gables and we’ve established roots here. This is home, so, I think it’s the responsibility of not just me, but everybody, to be a part of their community. Julio Iglesias, Jr.: World Tour with His Father, Family Life, & What’s Next

September-October Issue 2015 MIAMI NATIVE & SPANISH SINGER REVEALS WHAT IT’S LIKE BEING ON TOUR WITH HIS FATHER, GROWING UP AS AN ‘IGLESIAS,’ & WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR HIM By Gisel Habibnejad Photographed by Ernesto Poblacion With musical talent running through his veins, it’s safe to say Julio Iglesias, Jr. was born to grace the world with his gift. Throughout his lifetime and various works, music has always remained a constant. There’s no denying the greatness that awaits Julio in the near future with a new album in the works and joining his father on his world tour, among the many. Julio was born to Spanish music icon Julio Iglesias, and Filipina socialite and journalist Isabel Preysler. Growing up, his parents instilled morals and values that molded him into the person he is today. “My dad taught me the importance of working hard in anything you do in life and to always surround yourself with great people.” Having a popular singer as a father also had its perks. “When I was younger, I saw my father like any young boy sees his father. As I got older, I began to realize that my father was famous. It was always nice to hear my friends and their parents express how they love my father’s music,” says the singer. “It’s a great feeling when people appreciate what your parents do.” Although he doesn’t plan on having children in the near future, he can’t wait to instill his family values into his future offspring. “I value good people with big hearts, family, friends, and music.” As Julio grew older, his passion for music blossomed and he soon realized his purpose in life. “Growing up in a musically-inclined family, you learn to really appreciate it.” While it would be easy to assume Julio broke into show business through music, it was actually through his modeling career. With several campaigns under his belt, his most notable include: Versace and Gap. Soon after, he ventured off into other aspects of the industry. He displayed his dance moves on the Spanish version of Dancing with the Stars known as ¡Mira Quien Baila! He then went on to win the first season of Gone Country, featuring various celebrities from different genre backgrounds competing to become a country singer. However, the most memorable of his TV stints has to be his frequent appearances on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show. Somewhere between his modeling career and television shows, Julio toured and became the opening act of Cher’s Do You Believe? 1999 North American tour. Most recently, Julio recorded the album Latin Lovers, featuring various artists coming together to create a compilation covering popular Spanish music hits. Along with Nuno Resende and Damien Sargue, Julio performed several of these covers at numerous concerts throughout Europe. Among the popular singles are “Vous Les Femmes,” an original by his father, “La Camisa Negra,” and “Livin’ La Vida Loca.” When he’s not touring or traveling all over the world, he’s in Miami–the place he has called home for most of his life. Julio was born in Spain, but moved to our beloved city when he was a child. Ever since, it has held a special place in his heart. “My family and friends live here. There’s nothing better than that.” An ideal day for Julio is relaxing by the beach and playing tennis. “The great thing about Miami is that you never get bored here; the city is always expanding. There’s always something to do.” However, ‘home is where the heart is’ and his heart belongs to his beautiful wife, Charisse Verhaert. Charisse and Julio began dating 12 years ago and finally tied the knot in 2011. “I love my wife, she’s an amazing woman. I’m very blessed to have her by my side,” says Julio about the Belgian model. While he’s usually touring overseas, some of his favorite destinations are within our very boarders. He takes delight in making occasional trips to the Florida Keys and spending time in his vacation home. Besides boating and kite boarding, the drive itself brings him bliss. “The spectacular view of the ocean on both sides when crossing the Seven Mile Bridge really makes the long drive worth it.” Having attended Menlo College near San Francisco, Julio grew affection towards Northern California, which he visits at least four times a year. One of his favorite places on the west coast is Lake Tahoe. During the winter, he can’t get enough of snowboarding; while in the summer, he enjoys the quiet beaches. Earlier this year, it was announced Julio would be joining his father on his world tour. Their first official performance together took place on May 22nd in Romania. Bulgaria, Spain, and Portugal were among the other countries that followed. In September, he will perform alongside his father in Guadalajara, Santiago de Querétaro, Mérida, Yucatán, Hermosillo, Puebla, and Monterrey in Mexico. In November and December, he looks forward to touring in Asia. “It’s a great experience because I get to spend a lot of quality time with my father. To share a stage with him in front of 20,000 people has been a dream come true.” As for a concert in Miami, locals should be on the look out for an upcoming performance down the road. With this in mind, we had to ask: are there any future plans for a performance with Julio, his father, and Enrique? We were pleasantly surprised to find the answer to be yes. Whenever this occurs, it is sure to make history! We were especially excited to learn that Julio has begun writing and recording songs for his next Spanish solo album, which will be released next spring. Everyone will be able to get to know Julio on a personal level like never before, and he can’t wait to share it with the world.
