When Danger Knocks: Embracing New Norms of Protection in Everyday Life

When Danger Knocks: Embracing New Norms of Protection in Everyday Life By Diana Lammerts – Journalist, TV Host, and International Business Strategist  When the jet first set our wheels back on the ground, pulling up at Miami International Airport, the light was dazzling, the sounds dancing and sinuous as salsa. Sun-warmed air poured open the pine-scented windows of the plane, a watery light reflected from the sea as the jet backed out toward the gleaming skyline across Biscayne Bay. It was early morning, teetering on the nubile fringe of a rhetorical inquiry, but the question was palpably there in the air of my hometown: what happened to Daytona, Coconut Grove, Joe’s Stone Crab, and the party? What’s going on? In this city where sunrise ignites an azure chorus cacophony on the east coast, culminating in nighttime, the numbers tell another story. In the dazzling sun-splashed megaplex where the landscape swings from beach bottle tops to skyscrapers out to sea, crime is picking up – albeit a little too brazenly.   Miami is not alone: the United States is turning the counterclockwise to a certain, fomenting trouble. In New York City, in 2021, crime rates spiked by 30 per cent and counting. In Chicago, it’s a game of chicken, a contributive carjacking tale, with the streets turning into battlegrounds: 56 per cent increase in carjackings and 34 per cent murder. Here in Miami, our mosaic of cultures and parties, the odds have turned chilling – 1 in 34 of becoming a victim of violent or property crime, according to FBI data. Miami defies other parts of the Sunshine State; crime meters at 30 per cent higher than 86 percent of Florida’s incorporated municipalities.  The frontline of this battle is ushering in a wave of personal, bespoke defense, and at the vanguard is Viking Executive Protection Solutions, of which Roy Smith is the CEO. ‘The industry is stuck in the ’90s while other businesses have evolved,’ he says. ‘The time has come for a renewal, and for a more personal approach, disruptive to the market and a redefinition of executive protection and what should be expected and demanded of high-end personal protection in an increasingly volatile world. It should not be about the mindset of the bouncer of old, fighting and toughening up for Hollywood: this is all about providing a highly personalized, concierge type executive protection service, that fits itself to the client’s individual rhythms and requirements.’  Another internal guard is posted there to keep people from passing through. Roy Smith explains the philosophy behind modern executive protection: ‘What we’re talking about here is thinking outside the box. Modern Executive Protection combines sophisticated security protocols with the highest level of customer service. It seamlessly integrates emerging security threats with the comforts of a seamless, successful, and enjoyable client experience.’ These days, the stolid and uncommunicative bodyguard is passé, and the modern executive protection agent is just as comfortable operating from the shadows of a corporate boardroom as he is managing a thousand elements of risk at an A-List black-tie gala.  This story of escalating threat is not just emanating from boardrooms and penthouse suites. Everything around us – including where we live, the roads we drive on, and the public spaces we hold dear – is transforming into a threat space. Recent headline-grabbing incidents, such as the brutal assault of Lady Gaga’s dog walker, illustrates that visibility, wealth or standing do not make one immune to attack; they are likely inversely correlated with immunity.  In response, companies and individuals are increasingly seeing protective services not as a luxury but as vital insurance – a protection of personal freedom and peace of mind without which the executive may be mentally occupied by potential threats and preoccupied with safety rather than achieving success. The logic is straightforward: you get back more than you put in with executive protection not only by dealing effectively with the threats as they come but also via resilience in peace of mind, productivity and perhaps even the financial bottom line.   The story extends as far as the cars we ride in. Armormax, a pioneer in the auto bulletproofing business, reflects this same turn toward preemptive security. From bulletproof glass to armored vehicles, the technology and know-how are about getting in front of threats. Armormax’s founder and CEO Mark Burton has remarked upon the diversification of his client base, a diversification climbing across the socio-economic spectrum to include both political elites and ordinary civilians looking to level the playing field.  Founded originally to offer security for the world’s super-rich, the company subsequently started to offer services to a wider range, including private individuals looking for ways to protect themselves and their families. The cost of bulletproofing a vehicle can be anywhere from tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands. To bulletproof the entirety of a vehicle could be as much as $90,000; to bulletproof only the windows can cost anywhere from $3,000 to $20,000 depending on a host of technical factors and the mediums deployed.  Essentially, the message is clear: the paradigm of personal, family, community and corporate security is changing. Crime increases are alarming but they also spawn innovation in the protection services, which quickly moves many of those companies, like Viking and Armormax, forward. With new, innovative companies like these and others, the security industry is redefining itself and all of us. In short, when we are called upon to invest in our physical selves, it’s an investment in continued freedom and in the viability of our lives. Here in Miami, we’re at a crossroads, but we envision a future intending to lead the way, with determined preparation and the everyday actualization of the credo: when one spends money on security, we all do … together, more vigilant, harder headed and stronger than we’ve ever been. Strategies For Real Self-Improvement

It’s not easy to break with bad habits that keep us from being a better version of ourselves. Are there some concrete steps we can take ? Rabbi Cheryl and Andrew Jacobs are highly praised experts when it comes to teaching simple but effective methods of self-improvement. Naturally it all starts with self-awareness…..     Have you ever gone through a day and when it’s time to go to bed, you stop and ask yourself, ‘where did the day go and what did I do with myself?’ If so, then you’re not alone. Millions of people get up in the morning and continue through their day without ever pausing to appreciate the blessings in their lives; without seeing the beauty of the world around them; without stopping to take a slow deep breath. We become so programmed that we become aware of only two times during the day – when we smack our alarms early in the morning and when we fall into our beds at night. That is when we acknowledge our exhaustion and the reality that the next day will bring the same exact thing. But rarely do we take the time to look around us and see our true selves, and how we fit into the larger world around us. In other words, it’s time to become enlightened and self-aware.   What is “Self-Awareness” and Does it Matter? Our prejudices, biases, hurts from the past, and misconceptions effect our perception and our self-awareness. We’re driven by habit and polluted by our past experiences. It’s very challenging to strip all of that away and perceive the world in an untainted and accurate way. It can take a lifetime to reach a high level of enlightenment. It’s not necessary to live alone in a cave or become a religious individual to reach a higher level of awareness. All that’s really required is to pay attention and observe your thoughts.   There are many advantages to being self-aware: 1 It’s impossible to feel jealous, offended, or have other negative emotions if you’re self-aware. When you’re in tune with yourself, it’s obvious how un-aware others are. You’re much more likely to feel pity when someone acts or speaks against you than to feel hurt. 2 You no longer feel the need to impress anyone else. You’ll no longer chase after achievements or possessions for the purpose of showing off. You’ll be free to pursue your true passions without regard for the opinions of others. 3 Simple things become much more enjoyable. Eating an orange or going for a walk can be as satisfying as driving a Ferrari. The most successful person isn’t the one that has the most. It’s the person that’s happiest and most satisfied with what they already have. Awareness has a lot to offer. But how does one become more aware? It’s quite simple, yet arduous. Avoid the mistake of thinking that mental exercise doesn’t require effort. Becoming enlightened is challenging in the same way eating only one potato chip is challenging.   Try these strategies on your journey to enlightenment: 1 Meditation is the primary tool to reach enlightenment. Buy a book or join a local group to learn how to meditate. Meditation isn’t complicated, but it must be done with a high level of expertise in order to get the most out of it. 2 Pay attention. Notice your thoughts and feelings as they arise. If you’re sitting in traffic, annoyed that you’re going to be late for work, notice the feelings and consider the origin. What are you feeling? Why? Are your feelings helping in any way? Have you always responded this way in similar situations? Would a child respond the same way? 3 Play the role of the observer. It’s not enough to pay attention. Strive to be objective and non-judgmental in your observations. Imagine you’re a stranger observing the situation with nothing to gain or lose. Be dispassionate. Notice the rise and fall of your emotions without getting involved. Be a scientist. 4 Be patient. Becoming enlightened is like training for the Olympics. It can take years to develop the conditioning and expertise. Enjoy the fact that you’re making small amounts of progress each day. It takes time. 5 Let go of the past. If you’re still upset that your dad walked out on the family when you were six, you’re not enlightened. Being dispassionate about negative experiences from the past are half of the challenge to enlightenment. Let them go. Self-awareness isn’t just for spiritual, off-the-grid folks. Self-awareness is a worthy goal for any human being. Enlightenment is hard work, but the benefits are considerable. You’ll no longer have to be controlled by your emotions or feel the need to impress anyone. You can enjoy a freedom that you’ve never felt before – and it feels great! Want More Happiness And Fulfillment ? Be A Person Of Value.

Not seeking religious belonging but valuable spiritual guidance is becoming a core issue for many people in order to live a better life. Rabbi Cheryl and Andrew Jacobs are making wonderful waves on that front. Their guidance for people of all religions (and none)  has become much appreciated beyond their own Florida community and extended to all types of media. We wanted to get some simple advice on the seemingly complicated question: Is there a simple path to living a happier, more fulfilled life? If yes, what is it?  Here is what Cheryl and Andrew had to say…. Months before he passed away, Albert Einstein was asked by a much younger visitor to give some insight into the meaning and purpose of life.   “Try not to become a man of success,” Einstein told the visitor, “rather try to become a man of value. He is considered successful in our day who gets more out of life than he puts in. But a man of value will give more than he receives.”   In our world today, happiness and fulfillment are defined by success, and how successful a person is, is based not on what they give back to the world, but what they receive. And this is not the path to happiness. The wise Einstein understood what so many of us are learning – that leaving a meaningful and lasting mark on this world requires looking beyond ourselves; giving selflessly of ourselves, giving not with the hope of receiving anything – just giving because we can make a difference.   You might remember the “Open Happiness” Coca Cola campaign that began in 2009. The words “Open Happiness” were prominently featured in the campaign’s ads, giving off the carbonated bubbles that are an integral part of Coke. The marketing geniuses at Coca Cola defined these carbonated bubbles as the carriers of happiness. Once unleashed from an open bottle of the famous soft drink, the bubbles were free to travel the world and share joy with all they came in contact with. The ad was captivating and meaningful – you could watch these carbonated bubbles spreading happiness from one person to another. It showed that something simple had the power to bring joy into another’s life. Interestingly enough, on a very simplistic level, this ad campaign showed how happiness is shared.   Many times in today’s world, we think we are laser focused on healing the world. As we rush from moment to moment and activity to activity, we’re encouraged to take a break from the stress associated with the quest for success. We’re told to breathe. We’re told to take time to express our gratitude. We’re encouraged to meditate, do yoga, exercise and be mindful. While all of these exercises have meaning and purpose, let’s be honest: we’re supposed to engage in them so that we can recharge our personal batteries and double down on our efforts to become a success. When we take those few minutes to pause from the daily grind, we do so because we’re taught that in order to be successful, it’s important to invest in ourselves, to live in our moment, to take time for self-care, in doing everything possible to bring about self-fulfillment. However, with respect to self care, who’s world are we trying to heal?   With all the pain, loss, sorrow and brokenness outside of our immediate circle but very much a part of this world, we need to smash this stereotype of success and listen to the wisdom of Einstein. We can become glorious, yet fleeting success stories by breathing, meditating and being present while we give just enough to reap the rewards that come with success…or we can dig deeper. We can do the spiritual work that gives us the ability to connect with those spiritual bubbles that lie at our core – the sparks of holiness that live within each of us. We can do the sacred work that empowers us to open our hearts and souls to the universe and let these sparks fly – not with the hope of getting something in return, but with the realization that by giving of ourselves like this, in a way that transcends moments of gratitude, yoga stretches and meditative mindfulness, we discover that our sparks have the power change the lives of others, bring light to darkness and truly transform the world. This kind of transformation is not fleeting. It’s not “success”. It’s an investment in something so much bigger than we are. It’s about understanding what really matters. It’s about becoming a person of value. And it’s how you change the world. ——– About Cheryl and Andrew Jacobs: Rabbi Cheryl Jacobs Background: Cheryl is passionate about helping others on their journey towards spiritual fulfilment. Aerin Lauder: The Face Behind the Global Beauty, Home Décor, & Fashion Accessories Brand

By Gisel Habibnejad Being the granddaughter of legendary beauty icon Estée Lauder has its benefits no doubt. One of these includes being blessed with the creative touch needed to become a beauty maven in this industry. Aerin Lauder has demonstrated such talent through her global luxury lifestyle brand, AERIN. Furthermore, she has cultivated her talent in home décor, fashion accessories, philanthropy, and beauty. Aerin recently released her latest fragrance collection, Rose de Grasse which embodies the scent of roses—specifically Rose Centifolia, Rose Otto Bulgarian, and Rose Absolute. “I’ve always been inspired by the pure beauty and timelessness of roses. When conceiving the new Rose de Grasse perfume, we wanted the fragrance to be ultra-feminine and light,” shares the mother of two. The New Yorker takes her fragrance collections seriously, going through a detailed process and ensuring she is active every step of the way. “It always starts with an image in my mind – what I want to say in that fragrance and what notes I think will express that. But that’s only the beginning.” The next step includes working closely with the perfumers until she finds the right scent to translate her message. “I obsess over every little detail – I think it’s a family trait.” Of the products offered by her collection, Aerin’s favorite is the Rose de Grasse Parfum, “It’s the perfect combination of my favorite roses in a light beautiful scent. I like to spray it in my hairbrush before I brush my hair.” Aerin also has a knack for designing home décor pieces and accessories. From candles to lamps, pillows, and much more, you can find collective accents made with you in mind. Whether you’re looking for a classic or modern look, AERIN has a desirable piece for you. By adding candles to her fragrance collection, Aerin combines two of her loves in one, “Candles can instantly transform the feeling of a space. This season I’ll be lighting the AERIN Beauty Rose de Grasse Candle for guests.” A tip Aerin carries with her everywhere comes from her late grandmother, “‘You only have one face, take care of it.’ Skincare is so important. I always wear sunscreen and I invest in high-quality products that help protect and repair my skin.” Her favorite skincare product from Estée Lauder is the Advanced Night Repair. You can get to know Aerin personally through her brand accessories; each piece is mirrored by her passions. Miami Real Estyle – Tropical Modern Architecture with Ralph Choeff

By Angela Betancourt Award-winning architect Ralph Choeff is one of the leaders of the Tropical Modern architectural movements in South Florida. Along with his partners at the Choeff Levy Fischman Architecture & Design firm, the team has mastered the art of Tropical Modern architecture. They’ve designed some of the most celebrated homes and hotels in the city; including the Mondrian South Beach Hotel and The Anglers Hotel, both in South Beach. One of their recent projects, the Rivo Alto Island Residence in Miami Beach, is a stunning example of how well Tropical Modern architecture plays into its surroundings. The home blends the interior with the exterior by using tall and expansive windows and sliding glass doors for maximum views and enjoyment. The interior of the home radiates a Zen-like atmosphere that, as Choeff would describe it, takes the owner to a place outside the experience of the day-to-day. A native New Yorker, Choeff moved to Miami in 1978 after graduating from the Pratt Institute with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. “I believed that Miami was ready to experience real architectural growth after being stagnant for many years. I felt Miami gave me the best opportunity to succeed and offered the weather I desired,” he said. And succeed he did. Choeff has become a highly sought-after architect and has been commissioned by many celebrities and VIP’s including Cher, Matt Damon, Barry Gibb, Alex Rodriguez and many others. His work has been featured on national TV programs such as the Today Show and in various high profile design magazines like Hospitality Design. His name has become synonymous with Tropical Modern architecture in South Florida. “My biggest professional accomplishment today, I believe, is how far I have come in the evolution of my professional career and how I approach design. I am proud to have been one of the leaders in the movement of Tropical Modern architecture in South Florida,” shared Choeff. Choeff’s success in this space evolved from his love of modern architecture. In college, he began to admire the work of Walter Gropius, a German architect known as one of the pioneers of modern architecture who was also the founder of the Bauhaus School. “The modern glass skyscrapers of NYC were inspirational to me. When I moved to South Florida, I yearned for the opportunity to produce modern architecture. Once I got that and started designing modern buildings, tropical architecture evolved when technology allowed us to create vast and tall sliding glass door openings which also allowed us to take advantage of our climate. Tropical Modern architecture was a natural evolution that stemmed from that,” he said. As this New Year begins to unfold, Choeff will undoubtedly continue to make strides. He is very excited about all of the firm’s current and upcoming projects and has high ambitions for the future. His ultimate dream project is to build something so successful it will gain enough notoriety to positively inspire the industry and that is one more thing he can be proud of. Sparkle & Shine Darling Opens in Miami Beach

By Justina Coronel Photography by April Belle Adrienne Bosh’s new boutique, Sparkle and Shine Darling, is like walking into every girl’s ultimate dream of glitter, glitz, glamour, and more. At 1665 Alton Road, Miami Beach, this new location is an event space and a lifestyle boutique as well. With gold accents and pops of pink dispersed everywhere, the store has the perfect touch of elegance and fun all dolled up into one. Adrienne came up with the idea after a birthday getaway with her girlfriends to Paris that her husband, Chris, arranged. Soaking up all the energy of the City of Lights, dressing up from head to toe, and being absolutely fabulous with her girlfriends, led to her inspiration of creating an environment that could empower every woman to feel fabulous, as well. The boutique has the lavish variety of accessories from clothing to purses to notebooks. Not only that, there is a backroom that can host events and special occasions. For now, it is decorated in the cutest tea party theme but it can be transformed into several other classy and glamorous options.
